NOT LIVELY ENOUGH
MR. VAILE’S ORDERLY MEETING INTERESTED AVONDALE “This meeting is too orderly,” eorriplai ned Mr. H. E. Vaile, continuing his campaign for the city Mayoralty at Avondale Town Hall last evening. “We want some of those gentlemen who ask in infuriated tones what right one has to stand. They make things lively" Mr. Vaile addressed the largest audience that has yet assembled in Avondale to hear a .Mayoral or council candidate. Not one interjectcir disturbed the meeting:, and when the chairman, Mr. W. J. Tait, invited questions, there was only one response. Kntphasis was laid by the candidate on the desirability of removing those members of the Transport hoard who were not elected at the forthcoming elections. This was possible under the Transport Act. and it was in the interests of direct representation that it should be done. Mr. Vaile discussed and amplified the 15 points of his policy, after which questions were invited. Only one man accepted the invitation, and he wished to know why applications for the position of city engineer had been called outside of New Zealand instead of an open field being left for local men. It was pointed out by the candidate that it was impossible for a man to obtain the necessary experience for such a position within New Zealand. He agreed, however, that the successful applicant must he a Briton.
A vote of thanks and confident was carried with acclamation.
