A Few Sidelights on The Waikato Weights

In being weighted at only 41b below King Lu in the Storey Memorial Cup next Saturday, Corinax does not appear to have any the best of it. In the decision of the A.R.C. Easter Handicap. Mervetto (receiving 31b) beat Kingfield by a length for second money. In the Storey Memorial Cup next Saturday Kingfield comes in on 91b. better terms, a liberal allowance for his Easter defeat by Mervette. With 9.9 in the Storey Memorial Cup at the Waikato meeting on Saturday, Aussie has not been harshly treated. The distance is 10 furlongs. In the A.R.C. Easter Handicap last month Aussie was weighted at 10.2, and in weaker company he appears to be well in at Te Rapa. Melissa gave Tea Time 41b and comfortably beat him at Whangarei last Saturday. In the sprint at Te Rapa next Saturday they are to meet again on the same terms. They were separated by half a length last time. Compared with their weights in the Kia Ora Handicap at Whangarei last Saturday, and the imposts allotted for the Puketaha High-Weight at Te Rapa, Owairaka now comes in on Sib better terms with Lorient 11. (second to Ti Tree at Whangarei). while Schorr (third) is allowed 41b. In the Northern Hack Cup, one mile, at Whangarei, Gay Cockade, in receipt of 111 b from Brilliant Light, beat him by a head for second place. In the Linley Hack at Te Rapa Brilliant Light has 41b the better of it with Gay Cockade, and that should bring them together. Golden Wedding has been taken a risk with by the Waikato handicapper. who has let the chestnut in at 9.9 in the Hurdles. She scored at Whangarei on Saturday, after being narrowly beaten the first day, and even allowing for the difference in the class it would seem that Golden Wedding is in about half a stone too light at Te Rapa. The last time they met—in the hack six the first day at Avondale —Air King, conceding 41b, and easily defeated British King, and on the second day they were both unplaced. Since then British King was out of a place twice at Whangarei. In the hack seven at Tc Rapa Air King has to give British King 61b. so that as between this pair the latter has been badly treated. For the beating they received in the

Avondale Autumn Handicap a fortnight ago, the following horses come into the Storey Memorial Cup on the better terms as shown, as compareu with the winner of that race, King Lu: Branson. 101 b.: Flying Juliet. 61b.: Stormv, 71b.: In the Shade. 51b.; Tidal 21b. and Wenday, 21b. The other placed horses. White Fang and Lady s Bov, are not engaged. * * =* Taking a line through Vivo. Gala Dav is badly treated in the Frank ton Hurdles. On the second day of the Manawatu meeting Vivo, 10.4 (she won the first day), was only beaten a long head by Elicit, with Gala Day. 9.13. five lengths away third. Neither has raced over the sticks in the intervening four weeks. In the Waikato race Vivo has 10.4 and Gala Day 10.0. so for beating Gala Day by live lengtns for second money at Awapuni. \ IXO now comes in on one pound better Compared with King Lu. Lady Quex is exceptionally well treated in the Waikato sprint. The first day at Avondale they met at level weights. King Lu winning, with the filly ahttle less than a length away in third berth. King Lu won the big event (one mile) on the second day. whereas Lady Quex was hung up in the tapes at the start of the sprint. Now in the "Waikato meeting King Lu is set to give Lady Quex 171 bin the six. Both lit and well, the Te Aroha c»ck couldn't do it. * * There is no denying the fact that the Taranaki horse, Benzorn, is exceptionally well treated in the Waikato sprint. At Awapuni last month lie won the six with S-. 6 from Mervette 7.11, and Dobbin 7.2 (this pair deadheating), and next day, with 9.3, he was a close third to Dobbin 7.8. and The Raider 8.6. At Feilding. with 9.0, he was third, a length and a-half behind The Raider 5.9. and Dobbin S.<>. That was the last start on the part of Benzora. Now Benzora is given 8.12 at Waikato, and as he is in the form that puts him among our best sprinters it must be allowed that he is handsomely treated, and it will come as a surprise if he is not brought North. But if Benzora is in well, what of Dobbin? There was a stone between them at Feilding. Dobbin finishing second, half a length in front of Benzora, and now Dobbin has a pound the better of it. It would have been nearer the mark had Benzoin been allowed 41b for his beating by Dobbin. which indicates that the latter is in just that much too light.
