COUNCIL OF WOMEN MISS B. CARNACHAN NOMINATED FOR DOMINION PRESIDENCY Tht* monthly meeting ot' the Auckland branch ot the Xational Council ot Women was held last evening, when the president, Miss Carnachan, presided over a good attendance ot members. After some discussion regarding
—Tornquist, Photo Dominion Conference matters, Dr. Buckley Turkington proposed that the Auckland branch nominate Aliss Carnachan for the Dominion presidency of the National Council of Women. This proposal was unanimously car- I lied, Aliss Ellen Alelville, Airs. D. Nathan and Airs. Cook endorsing the j doctor's remarks. Aliss Carnachan i said she appreciated the honour, but ; that she must ask foi* time to con- j sider the question, as there were difficulties which would have to be removed before she could accept. The executive, however, felt that these difficulties could be adjusted, and Aliss | Carnachan accepted provisionally. ; Aliss Carnachan introduced two visitors, Miss Winifred Guy, an English I visitor, and Airs. Black, of WTianga- ! Miss Guy, who has been travelling Australia and New Zealand, intends to speak on the work of women in New Zealand. Later in the evening she displayed some remarkable examples of the modern poster art which she had brought with her from Europe. GOLDEN WEDDING MR. AND MRS. J. FISH I Mr. and Airs. Joseph IT. Fish, of Grange Road, Arount Eden, celebrated their golden wedding last evening. Airs. Fish arrived at Auckland with her parents from England in the vessel William Miles, in 1862. The passengers were brought out under the Albertland settlers’ scheme, but the parents of Airs. Fish sold their land there and came to Auckland. Mrs. Fish possesses a retentive memory and recalls many incidents of the early days in the city. She claims to have been the first woman to go through the Pa.rnell railway tunnel. Air. Fish served on the immigrant ship Delwaree, which arrived at Auckland in 1875. He left the vessel at Auckland and lias resided here ever since. LEAGUE OF PENWOMEN Professor C. R. Knight addressed the art section of the League of Penwomen last evening, taking architecture as his subject. The speaker was introduced by Airs. J. Stuart Boyd, president of the league. In a short introductory address, in which he gave a general survey of architecture. Professor Knight explained that an architect must always be able to construct a building that is something more than a mere erection of brick and stone. He must be able to create a thing of beauty. Alost of the famous buildings of the world were renowned for their beauty, and this effect must be striven for as well as sound construction and planning.
THESPIAN CLUB REVEL AMUSING REVUE The Amateur Operatic Hall was attractively decorated last evening when ; the Auckland Thespian Club held ;t j very 4 enjoyable social and dance to open the season. A revue produced by Air. J. Sharp, the organiser of the club, was staged during the evening, and the Thespians orchestra played excellently under the ; conductorship of Air. Patterson. The revue, which opened with a j chorus by the entire company, was made up as follows: Character sketches by Mrs. AI. Carte Lloyd and Air. Allan AlcSkimming: humorous sketch. ALr. J. Sharp: pianoforte solo. Air. Eric Alaxwell: dance solos, Aliss Isobel Brook: violin obbligato, Aliss Beryl Barker and Air.
