The Log Book

PERSONAL. —The death occurred at Sydney recently of Mr. Arnold. Levestam, a former chief engineer of the Union Steam Ship Company. The late Mr. Levestam was born at Nelson m 1863, his father being the member of Parliament for the district. After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Robertson Bros., of Wellington, he joined the Koranui as second engineer in 1888. In he was appointed chief engineer of the Dingadee, and later served in that capacity on many of the company’s vessels. He left the sea in 1925, after 3< years of service. He was a member of the New' Zealand Institute of Marine and Power Engineers, being for many years on the executive and also a vicepresident. He leaves a widow in Sydney and a daughter and two brothers in New Zealand—Mr. F. W. Levestam. of Wellington, and Mr. H- A- Levestam, oi Westport, who is chief engineer on the dredge Eileen Ward. NITRATES FROM CHILE. —The ship Baron Pentland has been chartered to load nitrate at Chilian ports toward the end of May for Auckland, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Fremantle. She is due at Auckland early in July. CALCUTTA-NEW ZEALAND TRADE. —The Union Company advises that the Narbada has been fixed to take the JulyAugust loading at Calcutta, completing at Penang, Singapore and Samarang for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin and Bluff, in place of the Hauraki. AELYBRYN in PORT. —The steamer Aelybryn returned to Auckland from Westport yesterday morning to have her hull cleaned and painted. She is in the stream and will go -into dock to-morrow. The vessel will undock on Wednesday and sail for the phosphate islands to load another cargo. TAINUI SAILS. —The Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Tainui sailed for Opua, NapieT, Timaru and Wellington yesterday morning to complete loading for England. With passengers and mail she is to be dispatched from Wellington for Southampton and London, via Panama, on May 9. PHOSPHATES AND SULPHUR. —The steamer Baron Maclay has been chartered to load a cargo of phosphates at Casablanc, Morocco, for discharge at Auckland. It was formerly reported the * the Clan Maclay had been chartered K load sulphur at Galveston for New Zealand and Australia. The Inshdairnie will probably take the sulphur loading. SUGAR FROM CUBA. The Hain liner Tregonell arrived in the stream at Auckland on Saturday afternoon from Cuba and later berthed at the Chelsea Wharf to unload her cargo of raw sugar. The vessel left Cuba oil March 16 and experienced fair weather until nearing the New Zealand coast, when she encountered a severe westerly storm, which delayed her arrival about 10 hours. Captain F. Richards is in command of the Tregonell.

OTIRA FURTHER DELAYED. —The Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer Otira has been further delayed at Waikokopu by bad weather, and will not reach Auckland to-day, as was expected. She is now due on Wednesday. The vessel is to continue loading at Auckland, and then go to Wellington to complete her cargo. Prom Wellington she is to sail for London, via Rio tie Janeiro. L. D. Nathan and Company, Ltd., are the local agents. MOVEMENTS OF CAMBRIDGE. —The New Zealand Shipping- Company advises that the Federal steamer Cambridge, at present discharging at Napier, is due at Wellington next Wednesday to put out part of her Liverpool cargo. The vessel will proceed from there to Lyttelton and Dunedin to unload the remainder. She is to commence loading at Port Chalmers on May 6 foi* New York, Avonmouth, Glasgow and Liverpool. The vessel will load also at Lyttelton, Wanganui roadstead and Wellington. She is due at Wellington on May 16. and will leave there on May 18 for Napier and Auckland to fill up. The vessel will sail finally from Auckland on May 29. ROTORUA’S VOYAGE. Yesterday morning the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Rotorua arrived in the stream at Auckland from London and Southampton, via Panama. After pratique was granted the vessel berthed at the Queen's Wharf to land her passengers, mails and part cargo. Later she proceeds to Wellington and New Plymouth to complete discharge. The Rotorua left London on March 14, and Southampton, where she picked up her passengers and mails, the following day. Generally good, weather was experienced until three days from Auckland, where sire ran into it hard south-west storm, which delayed her over 20 hours. The following passengers arrived by lire vessel:—First saloon: Rev. A. R. Alleyton, Mr. F. Bryant, Dr. 7*l. F. Bryant, Mr. W. A. Donald, Miss M. C. He theyington, Mr. R. C. H. Hooton, Mr. B. Kelly, Mrs. Kelly and 133 third-class. Captain F. W. Robinson, late master of the Tekoa, brought the vessel out from Home, in place of Captain J. L. B. Hunter, who is bringing the Ruapehu out. These masters will exchange positions when they meet. The following officers are associated with Captain Robinson: Chief, Mr. E. A. Burton; second, Mr. L. Griffiths; third, Mr. H. C. Cockerill; fourth, Mr. A. L. Nelson; wireless operator, Mr. E. A. Treherne; chief engineer, Mr. G. Little; second, Mr. J. M. Smith; third, Mr. W. Green; fourth, Mr. J. J. Plimmer; chief refrigerating engineer, Mr. S. F. Parrott; surgeon. Dr. .T. PI. -McDonald; steward-in-charge, Mr. Isaac Brain. AORANGI FROM VANCOUVER. —The R. Aorangi arrived in the stream at Auckland at 5.50 p.m. yesterday from Vancouver, via Victoria, Honolulu and Suva, and later berthed at the Prince’s Wharf. Fair weather was experienced until the vessel cleared the Fijian port, when she encountered a south-west gale and rough seas which delayed her slightly.
