How Silver Paper Beat Reremoana

ATHOLSPEAR BEATS CASHIER

(Special to THE SL'NJ HASTINGS, Saturday. The ground had dried a good deal when the second day’s racing was held at Hastings to-day. and perhaps that accounted for several improvements in form. The totalisator handled £19.294, as against £19,539 on the second day last year, making a total for the meeting of £32.899, compared with .£32.449. an increase of £450 on last year. TWe Hurdles One improver was Atareria in the Hurdles. for which Highwayman started favourite. Mandarine and Crishna were the early leaders, but Atareria was with them along the back and drawing away over the last bit won very easily by live lengths from Mandarine, while Braeman was hard ridden to secure third place another five lengths away. Ballyfarnon was fourth and Crishna fifth. Maunga fell, and Highwayman was very soon done with. Paki Paki Handicap There was a long delay at the start of the Paki Paki Handicap, due to the vagaries of Dimmer. Imitation and others. When the field did get a\tay Inflame soon got to the front and 4 Tom Byrne also began well, whilo crossing the top Joy Germ. Valpine and Flying Bingo were well up. Inflame led Tom Byrne, Joy Germ and Flying Binge into the straight, where Joy Germ went uway and won in a canter by a length ( nd a-half from Inflame, who was a length in front of Flying Binge with Second Thought, Imitation and Dimmer next. Inflame and Flying Binge had every chance, but did not stick on and joy Germs’ was a very easy victory. Hunting Boy was a warm favourite for the Juvenile Handicap, and he pulled his backer* through in a great finish. He began brilliantly and though Valpre got to him in the straight he stuck on when called on to win by a bead. The others were rive lengths away, Ben Hur at the head of them, with Royal Dine and King Acre next. Ormbnd Cup The Ormond Gold Cup created more interest than any other event at the meeting, and was a fairly good contest. Silver Paper, on the rails, shot away rirst, but Gascony and Cimabue soon got to the front and led him to the straight, with Toxeuma, Ten and Reremoana next and The Hawk last. Silver Paper came through soon after the field entered the straight, and though Reremoana made a great run from the back Silver Paper won by a neck. Toxeuma was third, a length and a ~ half away, and Gascony, Tori, Cimabue and The Hawk were next. Silver Paper won well, but Reremoana might have beaten him had the luck not been against him in the running. The Hawk was never near the field and Gascony petered out. Burke Memorial The Burke Memorial provided a fine finish. White Fang was a very derided favourite, and both Papatu and Cashier were well backed. Comical and Goodwill led out of the straight from White Fang. Papatu and Atholspear, but along the back Atholspear ran up to Comical. These two turned for home together and Cashier lenged Atholspear. J*i a great finish Atholspear won by a head, with_W hite Fang two lengths back third. Tresham was fourth, just ahead of Goodwill and Papatu. „ , The judge hoisted Cashier first and Atholspear second. Most observers considered the decision wrong, but it remained for some time and then was altered and made correct. Akitio Handicap The success of St. Melba in the Akitio Handicap was a great surprise, and he might have been a little lortunate, as Sylvan Dell and Charmaline got away badly. _ Bernera and Shortly led St. Melba into the straight and St. Melba drew out to win by two lengths, Sylvan pell just failing ‘ to beat Shortly. ext were Monetize, Charmaline and Dei - Ohiti Handicap Starboard Bight. Good Sport and King’s Jest were badly left in the Ohiti Handicap. Road Hog, always well placed, lasted long enough to win by a head from Spearmiss, who finished fast and nearly completed a treble for B. Burgess's stable. Imperial Fame was another head away. with Hpistle and Queen’s Choice next. Owaka Handicap In the Okawa Handicap Great Charter and Royal Duke came from the hack to fight a great finish, Royal , 13uke winning by a head. Miss Ran- ; som was a close third and Millais close i up. The winner was vigorously rid<%n by H. Wiggins. Following were the results: Karamu Hurdles, of £130? IS milcs.-^-Atareria. 10.13 (C.
