Neck-and-Neck Duel in Stakes

CASHIER BEATS WHITE FANG TOXEUMA’S sprint success (Special to THE SUN) HASTINGS, Friday. While there was keen interest in the joeing at Hastings to-day, the fields were weak in several instances, and this robbed the form of a. value it would otherwise have had. However, there were some good contests, and one of them was in the Hawke’s Bay Stakes, in which Gascony had to do h is best to keep off the two-year-old Admiral Drake. The track was in fair order, but on the slov/ side. The totalizator handled £13,605, against £12,910. Mangatarata Hurdles The hurdlers seen out on the day were a very moderate lot, and the distance, a mile and three-quarters, was too great for most of them. Favouritism rested with Atareria and Highwayman, a recent arrival from Tasmania. Passing the stand the order was Rakauponga, Highwayman, Mandarine. Atareria and Crishna, with Mixed Heather bringing up the roar. Highwayman and Rakauponga continued together in the lead down the back from Atareria and Crishna, and the same order was maintained until the home turn, where Braeman moved up. Rakauponga won by half a length from Braeman, Highwayman being a length back. Mandarine was fourth. Atareria was done with three furlongs from home, but he looked well and the race should improve him. Mixed Heather was lame after the race, in which he finished last. High-Weight Handicap The favourite, Kinross, for the HighWeight Handicap, had a great run all the way and then failed. As soon as the field was released Tan and King Manu went to the front. The order turning into the back stretch was Tan. King Manu. Jen, Tunbridge, Havanna, King’s Jest and Curtsy. Going to the far turn King's Jest moved up and was just in behind King Manu entering the straight, Kinross and Jen being next. In the run home King’s Jest finished well to beat Kinross by a length, Tunbridge being two lengths further back. Jen was fourth and Curtsy and King Manu next. Whakaaro and Havanna are likely Improvers. Charmaline wa.s badly

CASHIER left; she was well fancied in the right quarter. Nursery Handicap Hunting Cry stumbled soon after the start of the Nursery Handicap, and as he had the position on the rails he lost it. In the circumstances he did well to recover and win. • He was well backed, but Hunting Boy was a £3O better favourite. Hunting Boy led out from Clever, King Acre and Valpre, but several changes occurred before the first furlong had been covered. Rounding the far turn the order was Hunting Bov, Ben Hur, Royal Flyer. Hunting Cry. Royal and Clever. Hunting Boy was the first to turn for home from Ben Hur. Hunting Cry, Royal Bine and Royai Flyer. In the run home Hunting Cry came away and won nicely by two lengths from the big outsider. Ben Hur. who beat the favourite by two lengths. Lordlike was fourth and Auda, Royal Bine and Clever well up. Clever and Valpre should both improve with the race. Hawke’s Bay Stakes The field in the Hawke’s Bay Stakes had not gone more than a ” furlong when My Own fell. This precipitated an inquiry which dragged on till after the races, but no action has been reported. Gascony was a good favourite. The field of five got away in even line. Gascony and Admiral Drake were at the head of affairs a couple of lengths in front of Millais and Cimabue. Rounding the far turn Gascony and Admiral Drake were racing together well clear of Cimabue and Millais. Once heads were turned for home Gascony and Admiral Drake fought the issue out, the latter getting his head in front at the distance, but Gascony came again and won by a neck, Cimabue being six lengths back and Millais last. For a while Admiral Drake had the upper hand, but gameness won for Gascony. The Cup The Cup was a slow run race. White Fang made the running down the back, and was well clear of Cashier, Blimp, Goodwill, High Court, Tresham and Papatu. White Fang was first into the straight from Cashier, Blimp and High Court. In the run home Cashier

gradually overhauled White Fang and eventually won by a head, with three lengths back to Papatu. High Court was fourth and Tresham, who did not look well, last. Poukawa Hack Keen went close to paying another big dividend in the Poukawa Handicap, in which he caused a sensation last year. With Bernera lie led to the straight and there took charge, but when he looked to have the race won another outsider in Gold Bag finished fast and beat him by a length. Flying Binge was a good third and Sylvan Dell fourth. Desert Bad was very unlucky. Autumn Handicap Teri won the Autumn Handicap well. ITe followed Tanagra and Good Sport into the straight and drew away to win by a length from the fast finishing Spearmint, with Comical a poor third and Thrift fourth. Comical will be all right for the jumping season. Starboard Bight was left at the post. Porangahau Handicap Great Charter looked to have the Porangahau Handicap won at the turn for home, but Toxeuma swooped on him in the straight and won well from the little fancied Miss Ransom, who beat Great Charter in the last bit. Royal Duke and Moa Bird, who were next, should both do better very soon. Results are as follow: HAWKE’S BAY CUP Of £400; li miles 1— CASHIER, 8.1, J. Barry 1 3 WHITE FANG, 8.2, T.
