WATER HYACINTHS AND NYMPHAEAS
FOR GROWING IN TUBS Many gardeners are tempted to grow water lilies in the centre of their glasshouse or in some secluded warm spot in the garden. The cultivation of the small growing Nymphaeas in tubs or similar receptacles is one of the simplest and easiest forms of gardening. They can be most successfully cultivated in tubs, small concrete tanks or any other receptacle that will hold water, providing they have plenty of sun. A few goldfish in the pool or the tub are desirable, for they devour the larvae of the mosquito and add to the picture. Stout tubs should be selected, ISin. in depth: fill the tub with 6-12 in. of heavy loam, incorporating 2oz. of coarse bone meal. Sink the tubs 2in. below the surrounding ground in any warm posi-
tion. A few suitable subjects could be planted so as to hide the rims of the tubs. Another plan is to select large tubs at least two feet deep, nicely painted, standing in conspicuous spots in full sun.
