“Buy a Poppy?”
Sellers Work Hard in Auckland Streets ANNUAL APPEAL BEING MADE “Buy a poppy! Buy a poppy!” From early this morning—somewhere about half-past seven—the hurrying passer-by has been hailed with this request and has realised that Poppy Day has come round again. year the appeal receives better support and the passer-by dips more deeply or more frequently into his pocket. This year the sellers have turned out Ju greater force than ever—many philanthropic bodies in the city assisting in the work —and stalls have been erected in all the business sections of the town. For the first time ail the poppies on sale have been obtained from the British Legion, which has a factory in London staffed solely by disabled soldiers. More than 50,000 of their products have been imported to Auckland for to-day’s work. So far as the proceeds of the day are concerned 80 per cent, of them will be used to help returned soldiers in distress and the remaining 20 per cent, will be used for the Veterans’ Home. Last year £2,000 was collected and this year it is hoped that that record will be easily beaten.
