NO EXCURSION FARES
PUBLIC SERVANTS’ GRIEVANCE PROBLEM FOR RAILWAYS WELLINGTON, To-day. A deputation approached the Hon, ~Y\r. B. Taverner, Minister of Railway?, with a request that persons who, from public employment (such as the firemen, tramway men, etc.), are prevented from taking advantage of railway excursion rates at Easter and Christinas, should have such privilege at other times. The Minister said that the request was not new. It had been made previously by Dost and Telegraph employees (involving some ten thousand men) and railwaymen. If anything comprehensive were done it would mean making excursion fares available throughout the year. There were no regulations under which one section of the community, as apart from other sections, could be granted concessions. He would look into the question, whether it was possible to approach the matter from local bodies’ employees’ point of view, for he realised that many had to take holidays in the winter months, when cheap fares were unavailable.
