MR. G. KNIGHT RETIRES
26 YEARS AS COUNCILLOR TRIBUTES FROM COUNCIL Having served the city as a councillor for 26 years, Mr. George Knight attended his final meeting last evening. Several members paid tribute to his service, when the usual exchange of last compliments was made at the end of the meeting, which was the last of the council as at present constituted. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, expressed his appreciation of the assistance given him by the council, and extended his best wishes to those seeking re-election. Mr. Knight, said Mr. A. J. Entrican, had established a record of service. All his fellow members recognised he had always endeavoured to do the right thing, and he carried ’into his retirement their best wishes. A resolution expressing appreciation of the services of Mr. Knight and the other members not seeking re-election, and the services of co-opted members of committees, was carried. “Let me say to you young men and young women who are devoting yourselves to the city, ‘Be determined to carry on faithfully the work which your ancestors started,’ ” Mr. Knight said. He had always tried to do his best. There was much yet to be done, and he urged the council to go forward on the right course. He was not going into full retirement, as he intended to seek re-election to the Hospital Board, in the work of which he was deeply interested. “I may have years in number but, thank God. I do not feel the weight of them,” Mr. Knight added amid applause.
The other retiring councillors also acknowledged the tributes.
