CEMETERY FIRE

DAMAGE AT WAIKUMETE “ERROR OF JUDGMENT” The recent fire which swept through half the Waikumete Cemetery plantation was the subject of reports to the City CounciL last evening. The sexton stated that the fire was not caused by the fire getting away from his men and crossing the fire break, but by the wind carrying a piece of burning fern or grass into the area. The wind was not strong when the cleaning fire was started. About 40.000 trees had been scorched, but he thought a great many would recover. A special committee which investigated the outbreak and damage reported that in its opinion the caretaker committed an error of judgment in starting a fire under the conditions prevailing. Instructions had been given that in future there were to be no cleaning up fires unless the superintendent of parks was present and authorised the burning-off.
