TRADE IN PRODUCE
POTATOES WELL SUPPLIED MAIZE MARKET FIRMER Sun Office, 9 a.m. Spectacular movements have been absent from grain, seed and produce circles over the week. Potatoes, the principal item of interest at this time of the year, are over-supplied. Regular consignments of Southern potatoes have come to hand over the past week or so, and several fairly largo parcels are held on trie wharf awaiting sale. From the point of view of the Southern speculator, shipping North on consignment, the Auckland market is not attractive at the moment. A large section of the trade is being supplied by lines coming to hand as per forward delivery contracts. Pukekohe growers are also sending fairly heavy consignments on to the market, supplying all present needs of South Auckland traders. On the spot at the moment, best quality tubers sell through Auckland merchants’ stoi'es at up to £ S 5s a ton. In the South, the market has a comparatively firm tone, due to a certain extent, no doubt, to the assumption that Australia may be compelled to draw on this side of the Tasman before the season closes. Forward Onion Bookings The onion market is very firm. Regular shipments of small parcels are now being sent across the Tasman. Through store, Auckland, merchants now ask £lO a ton. Merchants have already commenced to cover their requirements up till the arrival of the 1920 crop, and bookings for Japanese onions for July and August delivery have commenced. The market is also talking American onions for September-October-Novem-ber delivery. Indications are that prices will be somewhat on a par with last season’s. The maize market has a firmer tone this week and. with supplies fairly low on the spot, Gisborne sellers now ask 5s 5d to 5s 6d f.o.b. Sales have been made at the former figures, but it is difficult to get confirmation of further lots at that price; 5s 7d a bushel is asked for later delivery. Oat Market Lifeless The oat market is lifeless and prices in Auckland unchanged. B Cartons are quoted through store at 4s 5d a bushel, with A 3d a bushel dearer. Chaff is very firm in the South. Ample supplies are available on the spot at £9 10s a ton. Both bran and pollard are in rather short supply. Weekly shipments of pollard are now arriving from Australia. Merchants quote pollard through store at 10s 6d a cwt., and bran at Ss 6d. The market for wheat is stationary. Through store Auckland quotations range from 7s Sd to 7s 9d a bushel. Business in grass and clover seeds is practically at a standstill, with most autumn deliveries completed.
Top-dressing manures are still going out in comparatively heavy quantities.
