£200,000 FOR RADIUM
BRITAIN’S REQUIREMENTS PUBLIC APPEAL AND SUBSIDY British Official Wireless RUGBY, Tuesday. Mr. Churchill, Chancellor of the Exchequer, stated in the House of Commons that the report of the subcommittee of Civil Research on Radium would be issued immediately. It would deal with the national requirements of radium in medical treatment, and for the purpose of physical research, also with the possibility of developing new sources of supply. The sub-committee had expressed the opinion that in order to meet the requirements of England, Wales, and Scotland, 20 grammes of radium, in addition to the stocks already available or likely to be available shortly for general medical use, should be acquired within a specified period before the end of 1930. It recommended the necessary sum to provide it. This was estimated at £200,000, and should be raised by a public appeal, to which the Government should contribute £ for £. The Chancellor said the Government had accepted the financial recommendations of the sub-committee, and would be prepared to contribute from the public funds up to a maximum of £IOO.OOO, at a rate of £1 for every £1 subscribed.
