KING COUNTRY ROADS
MAIN HiGHWAYS BOARD INSPECTS The Main Highways Board, comprising Messrs. C. J. McKenzie, J. J. Gibeon and J. Wood (Government representatives), M. H. Wynyard (representing owners of motor vehicles). C. il. Talbot (representing New Zealand Counties’ Association), A. Tyndall (Highways engineer), and W. A. Sutherland (secretary), at present touring the King Country', aict a number of deputations at Taumarunui. The Party was accompanied by Messrs. E. Langstone, M.P.. G. Albertson, P. Keller and G. Hooker, of the Public uorks Department. The Mayor of Taumarunui. Mr. G. E. Manson, welcomed the party. As representing the borough council, he asked the board to consider granting A subsidy of up to 50 per cent, on the maintenance of the main road through the borough. Mr. McKenzie said in r eply that the board could not deal with retrospective payments, and the whole question would be gone into this year. Mr. G. A. Stanton, representing the Taumarunui County, asked for assistance in maintaining the costly T<% Maire and Herlihy’s Bluff Roads, and for a better state of repair of the Te Kuiti-Bulls Main Highway. Mr. McKenzie replied that the claims of both county and borough would be fully gone into and whore possible assistance would be given. At Ohura the hoard was welcomed by the county chairman. Mr. E. Romanye, "ho, with other speakers, asked for the favourable consideration of the eouncil’s requests, the Ohura-Matiere. Tongaporutu. and the Mokau-Ohura Hoads being particularly mentioned. Mr. McKenzie promised that the requests would be dealt with, and later the council would know what was bcwig done with the money’ made available for expenditure. The board is now inspecting roads in the Southern King Country* districts. and is gaining valuable first•’lass information regarding the urgent requirements of this portion of the island.
