Steam Shovels Now Idle at Deviation

PALMERSTON WORK MEN FOR EAST COAST Press Association PALMERSTON N., To-day. Official instructions for the suspension of all work with the exception of that necese-ary to leave everything in a satisfactory condition were received at the railway deviation early this corning. Steam shovels stopped, and all construction work ceased immediately. Tho first draft of transferred men is expected to leave for Gisborne on Monday. Over 200 men are to be moved. When this is done the district will lose over £I,OOO a week, the average amount spent herei by the men. The only works which will be continued are the Mangaone scheme diversion, which is a fairly extensive undertaking, but is half finished, and certain drains in the vicinity of the passenger yard site. Other small jobs which will need to be concluded include fencing and such precautions as are necessary to preserve the works from deterioration for a period, of years.
