RIOT OF COLOUR

CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW

OPENS RECORD FOR AUCKLAND Chrys iUltllemums > muu-coloured and vurigated- made a riot of colour in the Municipal Hall, Newmarket, to-day, when the Auckland Horticultural Society’s Chrysanthemum Show was opened. The Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, performed the opening cere mony this afternoon. "The entries constitute a record and the number of exhibitors also make a record for Auckland,” said Mr. R. J. Thornton, the secretary, this morning. “This show illustrates that chrysanthemums can be grown equally well in Auckland as in the South. It has been a particularly trying season, but the show is excellent nevertheless.” Three years ago there were only about 30 blooms on exhibition but today the blooms number 1,000. This is due to the enthusiasm of the Chrysanthemum Club, a branch of the society, which was formed about 18 months ago to assist the parent body. In addition to the gorgeous display of individual exhibits there are a number of special displays. Sir Edwin Mitchelson is represented by a beautiful showing of dahlias, celosia and fern Chrysanthemums and fern are gbown by Dr. T. Endletsberger; a comprehensive displays of chysanthemums by Mr. A. E. McMahon; dahlias by Mr. G. W. Wright; begonias by Mr. A W. Palmer; dahlias by Mr. A. J. Shailer, of Palmerston North, and chrysanthemum!-. and dahlias by Messrs. D. Hay and Son. A unique display is that of Mr. A. J. Hipwell, with African and Mexican cacti. The show will be open to-morrow.
