HUGE MOTOR TRAFFIC
DOMINION’S MANY CARS REVIEW BY PRIME MINISTER Press Association WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Sir Joseph Ward, speaking at the Wellington Automobile Club’s social, gave some figures illustrating the development of the motor-car in New Zealand. Total registrations on March 31 were 124,015 in the North Island and 196,579 in the South. The number of new registrations during the last 12 months was 27,674. Imports of motor spirit had doubled in 10 years, and vehicles had increased from 3,094 to 18,787, besides motor-cycles, which had increased from 1,122 to- 3,558. In passenger and freight services alone, at last November, 2,215 vehicles were used, employing 2,950 persons and carrying 1,982,220 passengers and 84,886 tons of goods. . .. . Sir Joseph Ward also mentioned that the Highways’ Board expenditure had increased from £372,267 in 1920 to nearly £2,000,000 last-year. It now had a declared mileage of 10,139. . Alluding to the formation of a separate board for the South Island, he said he was sure it would be welcomed in that part of New Zealand, and remarked it was good to let people have rows in their own territory.
