WILL LOCAL BODIES GET RELIEF POSSIBILITY DISCOUNTED No confirmation is available in Auckland that the Government intends to relieve local bodies of their responsibility for the maintenance of fnain highways. The engineer reported to the Manurewa Town Board at its meeting that arrangements were practically completed by the Main Highways Board for the maintenance of the principal main highways. He was not in a position to divulge all the information at present, he said, hut he could say that it was the proposal of the board to relieve the local bodies of all liability in connection with the principal main highways. This would mean that the main arterial roads throughout New Zealand would be maintained free of cost to the local bodies. Inquiry in Auckland failed to confirm the statements made by the Manurewa Town Board engineer, most of those concerned expressing an inclination to discount such a possibility.
