When the train from Opua to Wbangarei was approaching the Ruatangata crossing about 7 o’clock last evening, a light motor-car, driven by Mr. V. C. Mason of Hikurangi, was proceeding down a steep grade to the crossing. Apparently, as a result of the brakes seizing, the car capsized and landed on the railway tracks. Tiie driver, and his wife and child, who were passengers, were just able to get clear when the train struck the car, carrying it over the cattle-stop and completely wrecking it.
