LAD’S MANY THEFTS

SYSTEMATIC STEALING THREE YEARS IN BORSTAL (From Our Own Correspondent) KAITAIA, To-day. “It is a sad thing to see a young fellow like you embarking on a course of systematic stealing,” remarked Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., In the Kaitaia Police Court, when William Macken, a AHctoria Valley lad, appeared before him on 13 charges of theft of goods and money, taken from C- B. Shine’s store at Victoria Valley. The thefts covered a period of months, and amounted in all to a total of over £53. On one charge, that of stealing £4 In money, accused elected to he dealt with summarily. After evidence had been given, the magistrate said he would not commit accused to the common prison, but it was impossible to allow him his liberty. Accused pleaded guilty to all charges, and on a charge of stealing the £4 was convicted and sent for three years to the Borstal Institute. On the other 12 counts he was convicted and discharged.
