PLUNGED INTO RIVER
YOUNG COUPLE DROWNED CAR OUT OF CONTROL (Australian a)id N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.44 a.m. MELBOURNE. To-day. A sensational motor accident occurred at Geelong, resulting in the loss of two lives. Mr. Arthur Emmins, aged 03, and Miss Madge Kelynach, also aged 23, were riding in a car which got out of control descending a steep hill to the bridge over the Barwon River. Racing at a terrific speed the car crashed through the railings, fell into the water and sank, the occupants being imprisoned in the car. The woman was quickly brought to the surface by an eye-witness, but was dead. The couple were to have been married next week. The road down which the car raced runs 'down a steep slope roughlv parallel with the river, and turns on to the Barwon bridge at a sharp angle, which it would be impossible to negotiate at anything but slow speed. The bridge is one of the main traffic outlets from Geelong and spans the Barwon River on the outskirts of the city.
