Great Delight’s Stirring Finish
WANGANUI CUP WINNER HAERANGA PAI IS CONSISTENT (Special to THE SUX) WANGANUI, Thursday. j The Wanganui Trotting Club’s i annual carnival opened to-day before j a large attendance for an off day. j The weather was dull, with occasional light showers, while the track was in ' splendid order. The racing was good and speculation keen, the machine • showing an increase of £1,335, the figures being: Last year £7,240, to- \ day £8,578. Everything points to ! another good day on Saturday, and the ! club should have a record meeting. Innovation Handicap Beginning well, Mild Derby soon opened up a good gap in the innovation Handicap, but with half a mile : gone Lady Author was in close attendance, followed by Oliver Thorpe, with Humming Bird and Highland Derby well back, and the only ones with a chance. Along the back Lady Author headed Mild Derby and led by half a length into the straight, Oliver Thorpe being two lengths back. The race to the judge saw Mild Derby do best to win comfortably by two lengths from ■ Lady Author, Oliver Thorpe being a similar distance away third. Highland Derby, the favourite, was fourth, 50 yards away. Mild Derby was second choice, with good support for Lady Author. Kirkwood H and i cap A hot favourite in Bingen Spiers won the Kirkwood Trot in good style. He was in a handy position with six furlongs covered, but a bad break along the back saw him lose a lot of ground. At this stage the outsider. Octachord, was leading, with Le Campion© half a length away, there being a gap of 40 yards back to Wild Downs, Haviland and Bingen Spiers. The lastnamed made a fine’run and was behind Octochord at the entrance to the straight, with Le Campione still in the picture. The favourite came away in the final run to win nicely by a length and a-half from Octochord, who trotted a solid race. Bessie Bingen, second favourite, went off badly and did well to get third. Audo Spray and Haviland were next to arrive. Eastbrook Handicap The Eastbrook Handicap saw great betting between El Direct, Bright Light and All Red, and it also proved* a fine contest, the lastnamed winning at the finish by a length and a-half from the trotter. Fliton rushed to the lead and piloted the field for over a mile, Nathaniel, Bright Light, All Red and El Direct being the nearest attendants. At the half-mile post Bright Light broke and fell back, but putting in a splendid dash was with Fliton at the home turn, Nathaniel, All Red and El Direct being close up and bunched. All Red did best in the run home to win from Bright Light by over a length, Fliton being the same distance away third and the favourite fourth. Then came Nathaniel and Welcome Pearl. Wanganui Cup The back-marker, Great Delight, was elected third in order on the machine for the Cup, but Regime, with Tomkinson in the sulky, was a hot pot, with Hostess second in demand. Native Hero went to the front and led for a mile and three-quarters. He was attended for'most of the journey by Logan’s Pride, Te Wahia and Warspite, Hostess being at the head of thQ next bunch. With half a mile to go Native Hero was still in command from Logan's Pride, Te Wahia, Warspite and
Haeranga Pai, Great Delight still being ! well back. Into the straight Logan’s j Pride drew level with Native Hero, Haeranga Pai also being handy, with j Warspite and Hilltop going well and , Great Delight coming fast. Haeranga ; Pai came away and was hailed as the ; winner, but the back-marker put in a great dash to win by a length. Logan’s 'Pride was two lengths back third, followed by Sailor Boy. Hostess, Native Hero, Schoolmate and the favourite. Hilltop played up at the start and lost a lot of ground. Autumn Handicap Our Nancy, a good favourite in the Autumn Handicap, came through in the straight to jog home by six lengths. Trumpeter, Pumahaka and Waitipopo were the early leaders, and at the end of half a mile were in line just in front of Mary Brown and Our Nancy. Crossing the top the favourite moved forward and when in line for home Fleming let the mare go and the issue was never in doubt. Our Nancy winning by six lengths from Pumahaka, with Waitipopo a similar distance back i third. Then at intervals came Mary | Brown and Trumpeter. Lady Yvonne. the second choice, jigged at the start j and never threatened danger. President’s Handicap Penalised 12 yards for his earlier win, Bingen Spiers was made a warm favourite for the President's Handicap, but two breaks on the journey put him well out of the count at the finish. Laurier went to the lead after going half a mile and was never headed to win by six lengths. Haviland and Peter Eyre were the winner's nearest attendants most of the way, but crossing the top Altonbrook ran into third berth. Nothing had a chance with Phil Green’s trotter. Peter Eyre was second, eight lengths ahead of Altonbrook. with Haviland fourth and the favourite well back. Wild Downs lost his driver in the first lap and Ben Bingen refused to go away. Foster’s Handicap Little Guy was a better favourite than El Direct in the Foster’s Handicap, which proved a one-dividend event. Going away nicely the favourite hit the front, Driver Corrigan taking the rails and thereafter had a comfortable drive, winning nicely at the finish by two lengths. El Direct ran into second place with a mile gone, and although challenging the leader in the straight had no show of getting first place. Rita Thorpe was making a bold bid for third money but broke, and Oliver Thorpe gained the minor honour. Hardy Jack tailed the field all the way. Morton Memorial Cora Tacks was a slightly better favourite than Karma for the Morton Memorial, which proved a good betting race, Logan’s Pride, Warspite and Haeranga Pai all being freely supported. Castle Chimes led out from Warspite, Logan’s Pride. Haeranga Pai and Sailor Boy, and going along I the back Warspite hit the front from I Haerangi Pai, Logan’s Pride and Sailor | Boy. Haeranga Pai went to the lead I entering, the straight, and finishing | full of running won by two lengths from Logan’s Pride, with Warsjbite a similar distance back third. Then came Sailor Boy and Enawah. Form Reviewed Great Delight proved his worth in the Cup, where he came from the back to cut down the opposition in a twinkling. He is sure to reach much higher society. Haeranga Pai is in fine form and will be heard from again soon. Logan’s Pride went two good races and should not go through the meeting without victory. Warspite is showing good form and Sailor Boy’s efforts give promise of
early success. The maiden trotter Bessie Bingen will do better after to day's race. Fliton showed speed and renuired the race badly, while Br-.srh Light s consistency cannot fail t u *£e rewarded in the near tuture. A\ inners in All Red. Little Guv Bi*, gen Spiers.
