Southern Varsities Get Carnegie Grants

DISAGREEMENT ARISES V (from Our Resident Reporter} WELLINGTON, To-day. i A grant to Otago University of £1.500 per annum for five years and to Canterbury College of £SOO per annum for a similar period, announced to have been made by the Carnegie Trust, have caused disagreement between the various university colleges. Last May it was decided to make application to the Carnegie Trust for £20,000 for libraries, £4.000 to go to each of the university colleges and £2,000 each to the agricultural colleges. Following this came the docision to apply for £I,OOO per annum for each college for university extension work. The various colleges were told of this by the University Council, and were asked to set out their intention of how the money should be spent. The proposals from Wellington and Auckland were ready almost at once, but no reply was received from the southern colleges. Further application to Otago and Canterbury elicits the fact that news has been received that the Carnegie Trust intends to make grants total, ling £IO,OOO to the southern colleges. At the moment the proposals of Auckland and Wellington are still In the Dominion. The Carnegie Trust authorities ap. pear to have been interviewed by Mr. John Studholme, who made the grant which endowed the School of Domestic Science at Dunedin, and the money granted Otago University is for work in domestic science. Also, it is reported, a board, including Mr. Studholme and Colonel J. Alien, has been set up to administer the funds.
