SHEEP STEALING
NIGHT RAIDS IN THE SOUTH PREVENTIVE MEASURES Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The support of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association is to be given to the effort of the Canterbury Sheepowners’ Union to have legislation brought down to prevent the carrying of sheep in motor-lorries at night. At a meeting of the committee of the association to-day Mr. Lockhead said the permitting of stock to be transported at night presented too large an opening to sheep stealers. He knew of numerous cases where sheep had been stolen at night and carted away in motor trucks. There was too good an opportunity offered to dishonest persons to make easy money. A sheepowner in Oxford had suffered extensively from night raids by motorlorry thieves who found it easy to get away with numbers of sheep. He also suggested that auctioneers be compelled to stipulate that there should be earmarks on various lots of sheep offered for sale. Mr. J. D. Hall said legislation to prevent the carting of sheep at night was most desirable. He knew it was, a common thing for owners to lose stock in this way. It was agreed that legislation should require only that no sheep should be loaded or carted at night without a permit, and that sheep so carted would be subject to inspection by any police officer.
A motion was carried supporting the proposals of the sheepowners.
