GIRLS FROM ENGLAND
BARNARDO HOME SCHEME SUCCESSFUL RESULTS Ha.ving taken a. party of 24 Girl Guides from the Barnardo Homes to Australia, Miss A. Windham is in Auckland on her return trip to England. Miss Windham, a daughter of Sir William Windham, who was in New Zealand in 1923 to study immigration, had an excellent opportunity in Australia of studying the success of the scheme lor putting girls in domestic service, as she relieved one of the Australian matrons who took ill, and visited all over New South Wales. She considers the scheme to be working very successfully. Girls from 14 to 16 years of age are being brought out from England. In some cases disparity of temperament between a girl and her new mistress might occur, but a change usually overcomes any difficulties. Some of the girls are not so happy as they might be under the increased freedom, but they are of an adaptable age and soon settle down.
