FRANKLIN SUB-UNION

Delegates from the Tuakau, Onewhero, Pukekawa, Pokeno, Te Kohanga and Bombay clubs attended the annual meeting of the Franklin Rugby Sub-union at Tuakau on Tuesday evening. Mr. A. J. Maiden presided in tho absence of the president, Mr. R. J. Glasgow. The balance sheet revealed a credit of £lB 10s. Officers elected were: Patron, Mr. Dynes Fulton; president, Mr. S. J. Woodcock (Pokeno); vice-presidents. Messrs. W. J. Taylor, J. Cruicksliank (Tuakau), G. Rogers, C. J. Leathern. (Pokeno), G. T. Proude, J. Townsend (Bombay), A. G. Walton, R. Phillips (Onewhero), E. Muir, W. Diven (Te Kohanga), W. A. H. Murray, W. D. Orr (Pukekawa); secretary, Mr. P. A. l-lillary; committee, Messrs. A. J. Maiden, J. Fulton and secretary; representative to Franklin Referees’ Association, Mr. Hillary; delegates to South Auckland Union, Messrs. J. Mill and Hillary; junior selector, Mr. S. J. Woodcock; third grade selector. Mr. .T. Hunter. The appointment of senior selector was left to the committee. It was decided to commence the competitions on April 27. A challenge; is to be lodged for the Peace Cup. Mr. W. A. Smeed was made a lHc member of the sub-union in recognition of his services as president, secretary. selector and former senior representative player. PUKEKOHE SUB-UNION At the annual meeting of the Pukekolio Rugby Sub-union held last evening, the retiring president, Mr. iS. P. Day, reported that the past season had been very successful. The union s competitions had created keen interest and an improvement in the standard of play had been shown. In addition the union’s senior representative team had won the South Auckland Union’s championship. The financial statement presented by the secretary, Mr. W. J. Short, showed that the revenue during the. year totalled £l2O, and the expenditure £lO5. This left £ls to be added to tho union’s accumulated fund, which now stood at £l4l 14s lOd. Mention was made of the Power Board Club, which won the union’s senior championship, and which was now disbanded. The City Club, which had not entered a team last year, was taking the field again this year. Recommendations referred to the incoming executive were that a stand to accommodate about 100 people should be erected at the football ground, and that hot water should be made available. The officers elected were: Patron, Mr. J. N. Massey, M.P.; president. Mr. J. Pollock; vice-presidents, Messrs. F. Perkins and W. Wyatt; secretary and treasurer, Mr. W. G. Patterson; Management Committee, Messrs. Day, T. M. Short, D. G. Law', J. P. Rae. C. Bauer, G. Revell and S. Marshall; delegates to South Auckland Union, Messrs. Pollock and Rae; senior selector, Mr. Marshall; junior selector, Mr. Revell; timekeeper, Mr. W. Pleydell; auditor, Mr. S. Campbell. It was announced that Mr. S. Cummings was providing a cup for the third grade competitions. The fixing of dates for starting the competitions was left to the Management Committee.

PAEROA SUB-UNION At a meeting of the Paeroa Kusby Sub-Union on Tuesday evening the following officers were elected:—-Pat-ron. Mr. H. Poland; president, Mr. \\ . Marshall; vice-presidents, Mrs. J. Allen; committee, Messrs. H. Robinson, W. Neil, J. M. Crosby, L. E. Shaw, M. Crosby and E. Shaw. MATAMATA Mr. J. E. Cummings presided over the weekly meeting of the Matamata Rugby Sub-Union. Four senior, eight junior and five third grade entries were received for the competitions. Messrs. .1. E. Cummings and E. CBarry were appointed to arrange the draw for the three grades. Players re-graded from senior to junior were D. Cannell, I’. Johnston, A. Hawke, B. Murray and R. Simpson. Tfio Tauranga Union wrote asking for home-and-home representative matches with Matamata, and these will be arranged later. There will be three rounds of senior matches. The juniors were divided into two sections, and both sections will play three rounds. The third grade teams will play 4 rounds. The secretaries of the clubs are to have tlie responsibility of seeing that third grade players in their own teams comply with "the weight and age stipulations. Tho suggested interchange of referees among the different unions was approved by the commitee. The clubs are to be asked to state on what night they wish to use the training shed, and when the committee obtains this information it will make arrangements as conveniently as possible. CITY CLUB, PUKEKOHE At a meeting of the City Rugby Football Club, held at Pukekohe pn Tuesday evening, it was decided to alter the name to the United Club. Mr. S. P. Day presided. It was decided to enter both senior and junior teams for the Pukekohe sub-union competitions. The following were elected a social committee: Messrs. C. Stoupe, A. J. White, J. I-lintz, W. LeatheiJand, S. Crotty, and J. Salt. League Rugby MEETING OF EXECUTIVE The first of the weekly meetings of the management committee of the Auckland Rugby League for this season was held last evening. Mr. George Rhodes presided. The following committee was approved:—Messrs. W. J. Davidson (City), IT. Caterall (Athletic). H. Soloman (Point Chevalier), J. Miller (Mangere), E. Redward (Richmond), B. Bongbottom, E. V. Fox (Devonport), T. Gregory (Marist), J. Clark (Otahuhu), W. Mineham (Referees). R. Shepherd (Northcote), W. Davis (Parnell), E. Foster (Ellerslie), T. Davis (junior management committee). It was decided to open the season on April 27. The transfer to Canterbury of J. Clark Newton, an Auckland representative player, was approved. The request of the newly-formed Athletic and Kingsland Club for nomination in the senior grade A was deferred. After lengthy discussion it was decided to make the following addition to the transfer rules: —“That a club cannot withhold the transfer of a player wishing to play for a higher grade than that which his club provides, nor cannot place the applicant in a higher grade.” It was decided to award a special trophy to the team scoring most championship points in the second round of the senior grade A competition. It was agreed to extend the nominations for both senior A and B grades until next Wednesday.

Soccer MINOR DEVISIONS COMMITTEE The Minor Division Committee, which functions under the new constitution of the A.F.A. in place of the former Junior Management Committee, has made the following appointments for the coming season: Registration secretary, L. Hockey MATCHES BEGIN APRIL 27 Men’s hockey will begin in Auckland on April 27, when club competitions will be set under way. TJntries close with the secretary, Mr. E. J. Hewitt, at 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23. The problem of grounds is still a difficult one". As far as can be ascertained at the moment three grounds will be available at the old home of hockey in Remuera. There is a possibility that four and perhaps five may be secured there. The association, however, requires a playing area. One is available at Papatoetoe and application has been made to the City Council for sever., but as yet no allocation has been made of grounds among the various sports bodies. Grounds arc also being sought from the Oneliunga Borough Council. . The executive has decided to limit the senior grade to eight teams. In case more than that number is entered. which at present does not seem probable, clubs are being requested to forward the probable personnel ot their teams so that if necessary the committee can choose the first eight teams _ AUSTRALIAN TEAM’S VISIT An Australian hockey' team may visit New Zealand this season, prior to a visit to Fiji in August. Provincial associations in New Zealand are being asked to support this proposal. which will be discussed at the annual meeting of the N.Z.H.A. at Christchurch on .April 24. The accumulated fund of the N.Z.H.A. now stands at £3S7. The income for last year exceeded the expenditure by £S. HOCKEY AT WHANGAREI It was stated at the meeting of the Management Committee of the Whangarei Hockey Association last evening that entries for the coming season showed a satisfactory increase. The following teams will compete

during the year—Women’s: Kia Ora and Hineraoa (Hikurangi), Old Girls, Portland, Avoca and High School (three teams). Men’s: Portland, Mata, Mangapai, Whangarei, Wesley and Foresters. COACH FOR GIRL PLAYERS That the standard of play in the junior grade is much below that of several years ago is mentioned in the annual report of the Auckland Ladies’ Hockey Association, which considers that the provision of good coaches and more frequent lectures would go a long way toward remedying the defect. Last season was a fairly successful one. but it is stated that efforts made bv the association to secure additional grounds, from the City Council or from other sources were not successful. The report mentions that the thanks of the association are due to the Referees’ Association and to Miss P. H. Dawson, for their efforts toward improving the standard of the play. Athletics NEW RECORD RECOGNISED The council of the New Zealand Athletic Association last night recognised as a New Zealand record the performance of Miss E. Martyn, of Canterbury, who ran 100yds in 11 l-o sec. It also recognised L. J. Pearces three-mile cycle record of 6min 49sec. S. A. Lay’s application for a javelinthrowing record of 206 ft 6in was deferred, pending the arrival of the necessary certificate. T. Oakley s application" in connection with the mile cvcle event was refused on tha ground of lateness. It was decided to forward Miss Martyn’s record for recognition as a world's record.
