At His Best
KING LU COMPLETES DOUBLE
Sensation in the Sprint
FICKLE weather conditions, heavy rain before the opening event and light showers during the afternoon, rather militated against the attendance at the concluding day’s racing yesterday at the Avondale Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, but the sport was every bit as good as on the opening day.
The rain was insufficient to affect the course, which at its worst was on the dead side. It was a splendidlyconducted meeting throughout, there being little to cavil at. The principal event, the Autumn Handicap, provided a stirring finish between King Lu, White Fang and Lady’s Boy, and they flashed past the judge in that order. As King Lu had scored in the sprint on Saturday he completed a very useful double for his ownertrainer, R. B. Hines, of Te Aroha. The Lucullus horse is back to his best form, and even after making allowance for the fact that he is at the top of the handicaps, he should score again soon. His performance yesterday was impressive. Lost Her Chance There was a remarkable occurrence at the start of the sprint, Lady Quex getting the tapes in her teeth at the start and being hopelessly left. Had she got away well she might have finished in front of the place-getters, Value, Subdivision and Chelone. Billikins led all the way to capture the Waitakerei Handicap for the popular Paeroa sportsman, Mr. H. I. Spinks, who also won with Ohinemuri the first day. The final event, which closely followed upon a heavy downpour, saw the little-fancied King Kmerald beat Thursby, with the well-backed division badly routed. During the day the totalisator put through £35,108*. against £41,833 on the second day 12 months ago. For the meeting £79,025* went through the machine, this being a decrease of no less than £11,634 on the last autumn gathering, the figures then being £90,659*. Notes on the racing and full results are appended. Hobsonville Hurdles There were no defections from the opening event, and of the 10 starters the punters expressed a preference for Kilburn £6ll and Komak £348, with Clockwork £142 at. a double-figure price. Golden Wedding lost about three lengths at the walk-in start and the little fancied Clockwork piloted the field over the initial obstacle, well clear of Kilburn, Komak, Ramblin’ Kid, Boomerday and Potoanui, Pouri tailing off badly. Clockwork held an advantage of over eight lengths passing the stands the first time, with Kilburn, Potoanui, Boomerday, King’s Guard and Karamu, Komak having fallen at the second fence when in second position. Clockwork increased his lead to a dozen lengths on the favourite along the back and : turned for home eight lengths in front ; of Kilburn, who was well clear of Boomerday, King’s Guard, Karamu and Potoanui. Never troubled. Clockwork won by three lengths from the favourite, with half a dozen lengths back to Karamu. Next were King’s Guard,
out three lengths clear of Whaka King, with Good Boy, Sir Russell, Cynthia N., Mithra, and Lorient 11. following Nothing had a chance with Billikins in the run home, and she scored by a length from Mithra, who came with a great run to beat Whaka King by a neck for second place. Then came Good Boy, Sir Russell, Lorient 11., Hipo, and Cynthia N. ' Autumn Handicap King Lu was selected for the position of favourite carrying £1,337, with the bracket, Stormy and Lady’s Boy-, with £1,267,. and High Pitch £704 next best backed. The second horse. White Fang, carried £673. Lady’s Boy, who drew the ace, went out very smartly and had soon opened a gap from White Fang, Wenday, Stormy, High Pitch, Tidal and Flying Juliet. Lady’s Boy was still showing the way half a mile from home, followed by White Fang, Wendav. Flying Juliet. Stormy, Branson and High Pitch. Lady’s Boy was six lengths clear as they turned for home from White Fang, Eager Rose, Stormy. Branson, King Lu, Wenday and High Pitch. Lady’s Boy tired in the run to the judge. King Lu made a great run in the straight and went on to win by a neck from White Fang, with Lady’s Boy half a length away third. Stormy was fourth, followed by High Pitch, Wenday, In the Shade. Flying Juliet, Tidal, Eager Rose and Branson. Mount Eden Handicap Best support was accorded Subdivision (£1.093), Lady Quex (£983), and British King (£733). The winner, Value, carried £7ll. Lady Quex got away badly. Value being the first to bi.-v.vk. the line from British King, Marble King, and Chelone. Value had charge crossing the top from Subdivision, Chelone, British King, and Marble King. But for British King running into third place there was no change as they turned for home, Value going on to win by half a length from Subdivision. with Chelone a neck away third. Then came British King, Marble King, and Lady Quex. Mt. Roskill Handicap Of a good field of 15 in the Mt. Roskiil Handicap, Black Maire £787 was a firm favourite, but at a nice price, and there was also good money in support of the chances of Respirator £723, with a drop to Te Money £533. At the start Star Comet, Sports King and Brilliant Light got the worst of it. Kawainga hopped out smartly from Air King, Grand Tea, Frothblower, Bizarro, Respirator, Black Maire, Brampton and Justify. At the end of three furlongs Kawainga and Bizarro were bowling along in the van clear of Air King, Black Maire, Frothblower, Justify, Respirator and Grand Tea. As they passed the half-mile Black Maire went into the van and turned for home three lengths in front of Kawainga, with Bizarro, Air King, Frothblower, Justify and Grand Tea next in order. The favourite appeared to be doing it well below the distance, but then Reed on Kawainga made his effort and had got to within a head of Black Maire as they flew past the man in the box. Justify was going great guns in third place, less than a length away, and Brampton was right up fourth. War Officer was next, and was followed by Brilliant Light, Te Money, Star Comet and Grand Tea. M'orningside Handicap
Heavy rain set in just prior to the final event, for which six scratchings reduced the field to ten, and despite the comparatively small field, backers were very wide of the mark in their summing up of the situation. Ohinemuri £1,294 and Queen Arch £1,136 were prime fancies, but the dividend-payers turned up in the almost despised King Emerald £352 and Thursby £3Bl. The favourite did not begin so smartly as on the first day, and was soon in difficulties, Queen Arch leading out from King Emerald, Sleepy Sol, Barometer and Maori Boy. At the end of three furlongs King Emerald was making play from Sleepy Sol, Maori Boy, Lunette, Owairaka, Queen Arch, Ohinemuri, Master O’Rorke and Barometer. The favourite moved up on the outside crossing the top, but was off the course all the way, King Emerald being attended to the home stretch by Maori Boy, Owairaka, Ohinemuri, Sleepy Sol, Queen Arch, Master O’Rorke and Thursby. The last-named made a great effort on the rails and drew up to King Emerald at the distance, but the latter had a bit in reserve and he finally won by three parts of a length. Maori Boy was half a length further off, with daylight back to Owairaka and Sleepy Sol. Next to go over the line was Ohinemuri, Queen Arch, Master O’Rorke and Barometer, with Lunette a long way back. The wifiner gave a return approaching double figures. Following are the resultsHOBSONVILLE HURDLES Cf £250; 2 miles. 7 CLOCKWORK (R. W. Lewis), bg, by Robert the Bruce—Topic, aged, 9.12, J. The s leading pair were still on terms as they 0 swung into the home straight, but on 1 their heels were Diamond Queen and * Archileen, with Measurer, Liona and £ The Dansant next. Nursery Handicap Gemlight was installed a firm favourite, carrying £1,332, with a big drop to Royal Finance (£678) and Motere (£649). Gemlight was first away to lead Pellette, Lady Suzanne. Snow Plane and Bennie. At the end of a furlong and a-half Pellette took charge and led into the straight, attended by Lady Suzanne. Bennie, Gemlight. Snow Plane, Royal Finance and Motere. Halfway up the running l Bennie shot up on the rails and he looked as if he would win, but Motere £ came away in a great run on the out- ° side to gain the decision by a neck jj from Bennie, who was two lengths m front of Gemlight.
