No Election Pacts
PARTIES MOST EMPHATIC Liberal and Conservative Denials British Official Wireless Kecd. 11.45 a.m. RUGBY, Tuesday. DECLARATIONS Oil the subject of election pacts to obviate three-cornered contests were made yesterday by Sir Herbert Samuel, chairman of the Liberal Party organisation, and Mr. Neville Chamberlain, member of the Conservative Cabinet.
HERBERT SAMUEL declared categorically that his party had not and would not make any such compact with either of its opponents. Mr. Chamberlain also emphatically rejected the suggestion that the Conservatives should come to any such arrangement. Arrangements are now proceeding for the adoption of candidates in those constituencies in Britain in which the final selection has not yet been made. The personnel of the new Parliament to be elected next month will be very different from that of the present one, whatever the results of the election may be, owing to the exceptionally large number of voluntary retirements to take place. No fewer than, 53 Conservative members have announced that they will not offer themselves for re-election. Several defections of members belonging to the other parties are reparted. The first of the political addresses to be broadcast by wireless will be
given this evening by a Government spokesman, Sir L. Worthington-Evans, Secretary of State for War. FORECAST OF RESULT CONSERVATIVE OPTIMISM (Australian and N.Z. Press Associatio)i) Aecd. 12.5 p.m. LONDON, Tuesday. The “Evening Standard” invited all members of the House ol' Commons to forecast the result of the impending elections. Many Liberals were non-committal, but most of the Conservatives responded with prophecies that the contest would give the Conservative Party 335 seats, Labour 219 and Liberals and Independents 56. The majorities vary between se’sen and 130. Several Conservatives do not expect their party to have a clear majority, but all agree that Labour will not be in a position to form a Ministry, while the chance of a Liberal revival is dismissed.
