INTO BUSH COUNTRY
MINISTER INSPECTS WOR’ ON RAILWAY AUCKLAND-TARANAKI LINE (Special to THE SUN) STRATFORD, Tuesday. Travelling by train, electric trol. ley, afoot, and on horseback, the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, on Monday traversed the greater part of the railway which is to link the Main Trunk with the Wellington-New Plymouth line. Good progress is being made with the work, but at present it is impossible to put more men on. 'J'HE Minister found work proceeding apace on the third tunnel at Mangaone. Beyond this lies the high bush-clad hills through which the fourth tunnel has to be driven. On the other side of the ridge the work is under separate control, and ig through much easier country. The Minister was satisfied that no mor* men could be put on the present diffl. cult section until the tunnels are cnn> pleted. He believed the work would be finished according to schedule.
Mr. Ransom was hopeful that there would be much new settlement ones the railway is completed. The couiv try is fairly heavily bushed, and soma la-ge tracts would be kept as reserves. He was well pleased with the conditions under which the men were working, and found little evidence o| discontent.
