EFFORT AT MATAMATA Tlie members and friends of die Catholic community in Matamata and the surrounding districts have, for some time, been engaged in the collection of funds with the ultimate object of establishing a convent in MataT . he . function in connection with their initial effort was held in the Town Hall, Matamata., on Monday evening, nen a large number of people assembled to enjoy the dancing and witness the presentation of the trophies to the winners of the competitions. Father Silk made the presentations as follows: Most popular girl within a radius of 15 miles ,of Matamata, Miss Lily Rowe, with 13,327 votes. Miss Rowe also won seven of the “First Past the Post" competitions; Miss Marjorie Whitworth, second most popular girl, with 7.652 votes: Miss Kathleen Darra.gh, third most popular girl, 6,580 votes; Miss Cecilia Delanej*, fourth most popular girl.
Other awards were: To the seller of the winning ticket in the Maltese cloak competition, winner, Mr. J. Cummings, Matamata; the “ugliest man” competition, winner, Mr. Joseph Fohlen.
