HORAHORA’S FUTURE

MAY BE USED AS STANDBY PLANT PLANS NOT DEFINITE (Special to THE SUN) HAMILTOIsT, Tuesday. It has been announced by Mr. T. McLennan, district electrical engineer of the Public Works Department, that no definite plans have been made for the use of the Horahora hydro-electric power plant after the Arapuni works have been connected with the Auckland provincial reticulation system. The three generators at Arapuni will supply 45,000 kilowatts when completed, which will be sufficient to meet the present demands for current throughout the district, so that Horohora’s supply will become unnecessary. Mr. McLennan, however, thought that it was probably the intention of the department to retain Horahora as a stand-by plant, in case of breakdowns, storms or electrical disturbances putting the Arapuni plant out of commission. The Bay of Plenty, King Country and Auckland districts were connected with Horahora and, if one circuit was cut, power would still be available through one of the others. In conclusion, the demand for current throughout the Auckland provincial district was growing so rapidly that he thought the fourth generator at Arapuni would be necessary in three or four years’ time.
