LAST DAYS OF “PARADISE” An English newspaper recently said that many of the best pictures are now made at Elstree in England. This appears to be a fact judging from the reception received by the British International picture shown at the Majestic Theatre during the past few days. . _ It was “Paradise,” starring Betty Balfour and Alexandre D’Arcy, and directed by Denison Clift. Most of the scenes are taken in the Riviera, where a young girl who has won a crossword puzzle competition is busy enjoying ; herself. While there she meets a hand- | some gigolo, who v, . falls in love with Alex. D Arcy her, while she is equally infatuated with him. Following the theft of some jewels of which the gigolo is responsible, she realises that she has made a mistake, and returns to her lover in England. A splendid array of players form the cast, which includes Joseph Striker, Winter Hall, Barbara Gott and many others. The supporting programme includes a Majestic Magazine, cartoon, a Yorke Gray stage presentation, “The Willow Pattern Plate,” and an interesting film, “Songs of England,” with a special vocal and orchestral accompaniment by Mr. Whiteford Waugh’s Majestic Orchestra. The new Henry Edwards picture, “The Further Adventures of the Flag Lieutenant,” a sequel to the popular picture, “The Flag will be the new attraction at the Majestic Theatre on Friday. In making this film of intrigue and romance in China, the director, W. P. ICellino. has produced a screen melodrama which, from an artistic and entertaining standpoint, ranks with any picture yet seen on an Auckland screen. There is plenty of spirited action, excellent acting and lavish and effective settings. Henry Edwards, of course, is again the breezy, dashing naval lieutenant, who finalises his romance with the admiral’s daughter (admirably played by Lilian Oldland), which was only blossoming in this picture’s predecessor.
