Rugby Union | MORRINSVILLE REFEREES The annual meeting - of the Morrinsville Referees’ Association was held on Monday evening. There was a large attendance and ti was intimated that there would be sixteen active referees available to the Morrinsville Union this season. Officers were elected as follow:—President, Mr. W. Hogg; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. N. Dey and E. Seville; secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. A. Pirrie; committee, Mesrs. J. Knox, R. T. Allen, D. A. Pirrit and W. Marwood; selection committee, Messrs. W. Hogg, B. Chapman and the secretary; delegate to the Morrinsville Rugby Union, Mr. D. A. Pirrit; delegates to the Waikato Referees’ Association, Messrs. D. A. Pirrit and C. M. McDavitt. The delegates to the Waikato Referees’ Association were instructed to advocate an interchange of referees between the sub-unions of Waikato. It was decided to recommend to the Waikato Rugby Union that the rules of the Finlay Cup be altered to enable the referees of these matches to .be appointed by the Waikato Referees’ Association. Golf MORRINSVILLE OPENING The Morrinsville Golf Club officially opened its season on Saturday, the president, Mr. F. Seifert, performing the ceremony. There were over 150 players' present, including many new members. Mixed foursomes were played, the winners being A. Mueller and Miss Gledstanes, 43 nett. This is the lowest score returned on the links for this class of event. TAURANGA CLUB Beautiful weather favoured the Tauranga Golf Club for their opening day last Saturday. The links were in excellent order, a large number of improvements having been made during the summer. The president. Mr. D. ivory, declared the links open for play. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies under the charge of Mrs. D. Ivory. The club has increased very largely in membership and an effort is being made to raise funds for the erection of a clubhouse by the issuing of debentures.
Soccer SATURDAY'S PRACTICE MATCHES At a meeting of the Control Board of the Auckland Football Association held last evening. Mr. A. Menzies presiding, 17 clubs applied for inclusion in the senior grade. It was decided to form A and B sections. A system of relegation, whereby the two clubs at the foot of the A section championship table at the close of the season will be relegated to the B section, and the two leading clubs in the B section will be included in the A section for the following season, was adopted. The clubs to form the A section are Tramways, Ponsonby, Thistle, Celtic, North Share, Y.M.C.A., Onehunga and Belmont. The B section will incl'udo .Bon Accord. Northcote and Birkenhead, United, Tamaki, Newmarket, Manurewa, Rangers, Philomel, Metropolitan and Corinthians. The draw for the first round of the senior grade competitions Mill be announced next Monday. The Thistle Club again raised the question of using Blandford Park for training purposes. It was decided to grant clubs permission to train on not more than two nights each week, and to facilitate the holding of club meetings in the committee rooms at the park. A fee of ten shillings for each club from the opening of the season until the end of Ma.y was agreed upon. The following practice matches were approved for Saturday: Senior Grade.—Tramway v. Philomel, Bock, 3 p.m., referee, Mr. A. J. Galley*, Bon Accord v. Manurewa, Blandford Park, 2 p.m.. referee, Mr. I. M. Wilson; Celtic v. Thistle, Blandford Park, 3.30 p.m., referee, Mr. A. Kyle. Second Grade. —Ponsonby v. Belmont, Victoria Park 3.30 p.m., referee, Mr. J. Ball; Thistle v. Newmarket, Domain, 3 p.m., Mr. T. Harding; Metropolitan v. Rangers, Victoria Park. 3 p.m.. referee, Mr. E. Parkinson; North Shore v. V.M.C.A., North Shore, six teams, referee. Mr. L. J. Check, others required. Lawn Tennis Association. Mr. E. Hickson presided. Proposals for the junior inter-island championships were received from the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. Messrs. Hardy, Nicholson, and Brock were elected selectors fo,r the North Island team to compete in Wellington in the first annual competition to be played in the school holidays in May.
The chairman read the programme suggested by the present inter-club committee for competitions next year and reminded delegates to vote on the grades in which their clubs would compete.
The following programme was unanimously agreed upon:—G.rade A competition to be a knock-out among the fourth grade A clubs other than the holders of the grade A championship. The winners of this knock-out competition to play the holders on the latter's courts. Grade B: Play-all competition, hard court and grass court sections. Grades C and E>: Playall only in sections of four, hard court and grass court sections.
All changes in rules submitted by circular to the clubs were unanimously confirmed. Hockey PAPATOETOE HOCKEY CLUB There was a large attendance of members and intending members of the Papatoetoe Hockey Club at an extraordinary general meeting of the club, held on Monday evening.. It was decided to hold the first practice on Saturday, April 13. The balance —beet showed a loss of £3 Os 6d. In all probability three teams Will be playing under the club's colours in the Auckland Hockey Association’s competitions. The following officers were elected at the meeting:—Secretary and treasurer, Mr. F. E. Carr: assistant-secre-tary. M*v A. Rankin: to Auckland Hockey Association, Mr. A.
