SPORTSMEN AND HORSES
RETURN FROM SYDNEY LIMERICK TO SPELL (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Manuka, which arrived from Sydney this morning, brought a large number of racing men and thoroughbred horses, and the return of some of them was somewhat unexpected. Chief interest centred in Limerick, who, though rugged and muffled up when he came off the boat, seemed to be bright and well. He was accompanied by Paquito, but not by Catkin. F. D. Jones, who was in charge of Limerick, had a strenuous time during his few weeks in Australia, and he will now be eased up at Riccarton for a while. Limerick is intended for racing in Australia again if he remains well, and, of course, there is a deal of interest in the possibilities of his contesting the next King’s Cup, which will be run at Brisbane. He won the last, which was contested at Randwick. The chances are he will turn his head toward Australia again in between three and four months’ time. Paquito, who won while in the Commonwealth, is understood to have paid his way, and his future programme is not decided. Jones brought back with him a yearling bay gelding by Red Dennis, out of a mare by Bowman, which he purchased for 45 guineas. - Sportsmen who returned by the Manuka were Messrs. E. S. Luttrell, H. A. Knight, J. M. Cameron, T. E/Roulston, C. Boyle, F. D. Jones, J. Feilder, W. Higgins, D. Moroney and T. Handley. Nedda was among the returnees, J. Feilder being in charge. As far as could be gathered, the filly is well, but due for a spell. Feilder also brought over a gelding by Tippler from Sweet Form, which he purchased for 300 guineas. Sweet Form was a Multiform mare. Honour Left Behind Honour and Catkin did not come back, but were left in Sydney to be put up for auction. j J. M. Cameron did not remain long in Wellington. In fact, he caught the first train to Hastings, and there l«e will look over his horses and affairs, as he intends to spend the winter in Queensland. He had a big battle with pneumonia last winter in New Zealand, and is planning to evade the cold spell in this country by sojourning in semitropical Queensland a while. It is possible that he will take The Hawk and Merry Mint across with him, but he was unable to speak definitely on this point. Apart from the horses mentioned, there also arrived Mr. C. Elgar’s colt by Rossendale from Demeter, for which he paid 1,600 guineas at the Sydney sales, and a Caravel —Martuk colt bought by the same sportsman for 900 guineas. A bay colt by Saltash out of Thaise was landed for Mr. Charles Boyle, of Wellington. The youngster cost 375 guineas. His dam, Thaisa, is by Comedy King from Lady Sybia, who was a half-sister to Lord Cardigan. For Mr. G. D. Greenwood a bay colt by Saltash —Aries arrived. Aries is a Welkin mare out of Armigera, by Hatchkiss, out of Armilla. The price paid for this youngster was 325 guineas. Air. lan Duncan’s brood mare Esther returned with a filly foal by Heroic, to whom she is again in foal. RACING FIXTURES ! April 12, 13—Mastcrton R.C. April IS, 20—Whangarei R.C. !
