MR. BRUCE—MEDIATOR
COALMINES DISPUTE INVESTIGATION PROMISED (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY, Tuesday. The Prime Minister, Mr. S. M. Bruce, at the conference between representatives of the coalmine owners and the Miners’ Federation, appealed to both sides to reopen the mines and settle their differences. He promised that afterwards a full investigation would he made by a Royal Commission. Mr. Bruce announced that with a view to encouraging peace in the industry the prosecution of Mr. John Brown, coalmine owner, of Newcastle, on a charge of causing - an alleged lock-out on the Northern coalfields, would not be proceeded with. Mr. McDonald, chairman of the Northern Collieries Association, said the loss In wages caused by strikes since 1919 amounted to £6,392,000. The mineowners had not asked for a bounty, but it was essential that the costs of production should be reduced in order to re-establish the industry.
