FAREWELL TO ENGINEER
MR. W. CULLEN RETIRES TRIBUTES FROM DEPARTMENT Press Association WELLINGTON. Monday. The staff of the Marine. Department to-day bid farewell to Air. William Cullen. chief inspector of machinery, Chief surveyor of ships, and chief examiner of engineers, who has retired after 25 years’ service. The Minister of Marine, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, presided. Mr. G. C. Godfrej*, secretary of the department, said the best testimony he could give regarding the value of Air. Cullen's service to the department was that he had remained on duty for three years over the retiring age at the speaker’s request. There was no more loyal servant of the department. He "as leaving the service with a line record and all wished him and Airs. Cullen every happiness. The Minister said that of all the 1 interesting things said of Air. Cullen, | / * »u>st important was that he oricame from Scotland, a country exported many useful people and —theologians, bankers, whisky r marine engineers. Air. Cullen was engineer, and he had tilled appointments very efficiently* P* had learned his business in GlasW? and had worthily upheld his pro€fcs*ion in the service of the Union ' Ship Company from ISB3 until During 10 of those years he was engineer. _ Mr. Cullen had joined the Alarine Department's service as inspector of j Machinery and had risen to the highest j position he could attain in that ser- , vice, in which he had gained the esteem and confidence of all.
in handing Mr. Cullen, a well-filled Wallet of banknotes on behalf of the *taff of the department, the Alinister wished him and Airs. Cullen every possible happiness.
