TAUMARUNUI MAYORALTY

(From Our Own Correspondent) TAUMARUNUI, To-day. Nominations announced for the Mayoral contest for Taumarunui Borough are Mr. C. A. Boles, a member of the council, and the present Mayor, Mr. G. E. Manson. It is rumoured that another councillor is seeking nomination, but -so far nothing has been made public.

Great interest is being evinced in the Railway Department’s experiments with the new Garratt engine, at present on the run betw’een Taumarunui and Taihape. The engine on her first big effort southward easily “lifted” a load of 450 tons, and it is confidently anticipated that loads of 500 tons will be quite possible on the King Country portion of the Main Trunk line in future.

The Manunui Homing Pigeon Club's race from Ngaruawahia, completing tho second series from the North, resulted: J. Whittaker’s Prince Humphrey, 1,214.5yds a minute, 1; R. Patterson’s Consent, 1,213.5yd5, 2; J. Lang well's Loch Moigh, 1,206.2yd5, 3; D. Wilson's Red Heckle, 1,202.9yd5, 4. The race was for Mr. D. Brown’s trophy. Next week the club will race from Palmerston North for Mr. A. E. Perry’s trophy.

Mr. N. R. Lyth, A.M.1.C.E., formerly engeneer-in-chief of the Ohura-Strat-ford railway, has been appointed engi-neer-in-charge of the Public Works Department at Wanganui. Mr. E. Garlick, A.M.1.C.E., has been appointed engineer-in-charge of the Te Kuiti office, which is a sub-district of Taumarunui. Mr. D. Deere, who has been given the position of senior clerk in the Public Works office at Ohura, controlled by Taumarunui, has arrived from Westport.

At its monthly meeting the Kaitieke County Council resolved to lend its support to the movement for the establishment of a Central Land Board to govern the lands of the King Country. The clerk. Mr. H. B. Hill, reported that the county fund account showed a credit of £4.881. The chairman, Mr. T. Crocker, and Cr. A. H. Barker were appointed the council's delegates tu the annual conference regarding heavy traffic fees.
