WON THE WAR
Foch’s Tribute to HaigV “Wonderful Army” SAVED FRANCE AND ALLIES (Australian and 2V.Z. Press Assooiatic) (United Service) LONDON, Saturday. The question of who won the war has been answered by Colonel Lionel James, formerly war correspondent for The Times, who commanded the Kins Edward’s Horse in France and Italy from 1915 to 1918. Writing in the "Evening Standard” he says:— “At the beginning of August, 191 S, the French Army was almost completely exhausted as a fighting force. The Americans were a vigorous rabble and the British Army was the only force that was a real fighting instrument.” The writer states that Marshal Foch, at his first meeting with FieldMarshal Haig after the Armistice, said: “My dear marshal, your wonderful army has saved France —has saved us all. Without you we were beaten.” A few days later, when the details were better known. Marshal Foch, at the luncheon table at general headquarters, said: “The work of your British Army will live for all time as a classic instance of how great military operations should be conducted. Nothing ever was seen like it in the history of all wars.”
