SEASON’S AVERAGES
BOWLEY AND DUNNING ON TOP ALLCOTT BEST ALL-ROUND The final batting and bowling averages of the cricketers who have taken part in the Auckland Cricket Association’s Senior A grade championship games for the 1925-29 season, closed on Saturday last, show the Sussex professional player-coach, E. H. Bowley (Y.M.C.A.) at the top of the batting list, with the former Auckland Rhodes scholar, J. A. Dunning (University), as the best bowler.
Bowley played ten innings, once not out, for a total of 820 runs, at an average of 91.11 runs an innings. He is followed on the batting list by the New Zealand representative, J. E. Mills (Eden), who, with a total of 852 to his credit, has scored more runs in Auckland senior cricket this season than any other batsman. Mills's average is 55.20. Eden also occupies third and fourth places on the batting list, with G. L. Weir and H. D. Gillespie respectively. Weir has an average of 75.28, his biggest innings of the season being 130 not out in the first match. Gillespie has batted on eleven occasions for 541 runs, and thus has an average of 49.09. Fifth on the list comes one of the most promising colts in the Dominion, H. Whitelaw, with an average of 47.71. He has played only seven innings in senior cricket, so that some idea of his consistent batting is afforded when it is noted that his highest score is 91. SMITH GETS MOST WICKETS The Auckland Plunket Shield captain, C. F. W. Alleott (Grafton), is next on tho batting list with an average of 44.90. As this player stands seventh on the bowling list, he has the best allround performance of the season to his credit. The former West Indies player, and one time New Zealand captain, S. G. Smith (Ponsonby), is seventh on the batting list, with an average of 44.33. As this veteran cricketer also stands 11th on the bowling list, he must be ranked second only to Alleott as the best all-rounder of the season. With 45 wickets to his credit, he has bagged more batsmen than any other Auckland bowler this season. An interesting thing about the batting averages is to see W. BrookeSmith (Eden) 22nd on the list with an average of 27.57. Away back in 1906, 23 years ago now, Brooke-Smith won his New Zealand cap. It is wonderful how he keeps form. DUNNING’S REMARKABLE RECORD Dunning has the rather remarkable bowling average of 6.91. Before leaving Auckland for Dunedin, he took 39 wickets, costing in all only 249 runs. Langton (Eden), who has sprung into the limelight rather late in the season, has taken 20 wickets at an average of 10.50 runs apiece, and thus stands second to Dunning. Leikis (United Suburbs) has caused something of a surprise by working his way into third place with an average of 12.55. Macallan (Parnell) and H.
Webb (Nortli Shore) are fourth and fifth respectively on the bowling list. In compiling the averages below only batsmen who have an average of 20 or over, and bowlers who have taken at least ten wickets, have been considered. Abbreviations are as follow: Y.M. (Y'.M.C.A.), Par. (Parnell), Graft. (Grafton), Pons. (Ponsonby), Var. (University), Shore (Devonport), Sub. (United Suburbs). Following are the averages: BATTING Not Name. In. out H.S. Tl. Av.
