55 YEARS AS BISHOP
ARCHBISHOP REDWOOD’S 90TH BIRTHDAY LONG LIFE IN WELLINGTON (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, To-day. To-day Archbishop Redwood, for 55 years Roman Catholic Bishop and for 42 years Archbishop of Wellington, is celebrating his 90th birthday. At a meeting held in St. Patrick’s College on Friday evening the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, congratulated him on the splendid work lie had done in the diocese. "It is a wonderful record,” said Sir Joseph, "and eminently remarkable for a man who has such a great responsibility on his shoulders. May we wish him many happy returns of this day.” Archbishop Redwood was born in Staffordshire, England, in 1539, and
came to New Zealand with his parents when he was three years old. His parents settled in Nelson and at the age of 12 he returned to France to study for the priesthood. He was ordained at Maynooth, Ireland, in 1865, and on the death of Bishop Viard, in 1874, he was appointed second Roman Catholic Bishop of 'Wellington. Thirteen years later he was created Archbishop.
