Awapuni Horses for Masterton

CALLANMORE TURNED OUT I 1 (Special to THE SU2?) PALMERSTON N., Friday. A strong team of horses from Awa- 1 jroni promises to make the trip through j to the Wairarapa fixture, Mrs. A. Me- i Donald’s string numbering eight, l Novar, Elicit, Red Fuchsia and Moun- | tain Crag are included in the High- < weight Handicap, with the other repre- i sentatives almost a stone away. Yesterdaj' morning Novar, in company with Mister Gamp, with K. Voitre T and R. G. Stratton as their respective < pilots, were sent *\lotig over seven { furlongs on the plough in 1.34. the pair j finishing on terms. < Elicit, Red Fuchsia and Locarno were 1 restricted to solid work on the plough, although the pace was solid over final pinch. All three look very well, ] Red Fuchsia having lightened up slightly as the result of his Feilding ( outings. While Locarno figures in the Mas- i terton Cup with 7.9, no decision has ( as yet been arrived at in the matter, 1 there being a possibility that he will ; not be a runner till the second day. < Should he start in the Cup, however, T. Webster will probably have the mount. A Likely Sort The Grandcourt—Cleasanta gelding who is receiving his education at the hands of R. E. Hatch, is down to con- < test his first race under silk at Masterton where he has been accorded the poundage of 7.5 in the Juvenile Handicap. A nice cut of a youngster, a name has still to be found for him. Mrs. McDonald’s stable will have a possible representative in the Lawn Handicap in Red Fuchsia, although the All Red gelding also claims an engagement in the High-weight. However, as the stable has Elicit and Mountain Crag in, it points to Red Fuchsia taking on the mile race in preference. G. W. New had four representatives nominated for Masterton, but at least one in Malahat will not now make the trip. The Gasbag gelding recorded a very fair performance at Feilding when he got out of the maiden ranks, but he is not being ask«d to go on with it meantime. Great Lady, Desert Lad and Grand Acre will now represent G. W. New’s establishment at Masterton, the firstnamed being a Bisogne—Lady Elgiva filly, who will be making her first appearance in public with the colours up. fehe is moulded on attractive lines, but like other members of that family i s a little highly strung. Desert Lad, who has been disappointing of late, yet despite such has maintained his position in the weights in surprising manner, figures in the Lawn Handicap field at Masterton, in which the Acre gelding has been awarded i; 1 ?’ R °y al ®lack, a double winner at' Feilding being only 41b above him. However, it is a drop to his usual burden and he may appreciate it. Tiega, who was sent to Mrs. MeDonald some little time ago with a view to his being put to the hurdling branch, has been accorded a nomination in the Flying Handicap at Masterton, but it would be expecting too much to look for a display of his old form as yet. The Kilboy geldiog is, however, carrying quite a hfelthy appearance. Put Aside Callanmore was taken through to the Tauherenikau fixture at Easter, but 1 the Absurd gelding found the track too hard for him and he went very sore. As a result he will be put aside

for some little time and will in const* quence decline his engagement in the Flying Handicap in which he had appeared to be well in -with 7.6. Hymestrason, who has been restating his activities to the jumping branch of late, claims an engagement on the fiat at Masterton, where he is down to contest the Grandstand Hair dicap, a seven furlong event. As the result of rapping a batten at Feilding, the Hymestra gelding’s near rear leg filled, but he worked freely enough yesterday morning. Grand Aero was installed favourite both days at Feilding, but the Act# gelding failed to live up to the expectations of his backers, being well beaten at both essays. However, that form was all wrong and he may do better at Masterton, although as he heads the scale of weights in the Grandstand Handicap with 9.6 he cannot be considered to have been lightly treated. Aurora Borealis, who ran seconds at Awapuni and Feilding, the Day Comet mare returning her backers pleasing dividends on both occasions, is down to compete in the Lawn Handicap. Aurora Borealis is now' being trained by her owner, Mr. F. R. Waller. Another Day Comet production in Skyrider also figures in the same race. She is a member of J. F. Coyle’s string. The chestnut is now carrying more condition than formerly and may yet prove herself. Black Acre, although still in maiden ranks, will contest the Lanfff downe Hack Handicap at Masterton, while the same stable will presept Glyn Bu in the maiden event. Incidentally', Peneus will accompany the team across the range, Mrs. McDonald returning the old fellow to his owner. Unfortunately, in addition to failing to come back, Peneus va | responsible for the destruction of the promising Kalos. Jottings G. W. New is at present up in wO Gisborne district and he will bring back with him a Hunting Song youngster who has been purchased by a local sportsman. . T. Metcalf has been engaged to pndy Bonogne, Hunting Call and Full Mark at Masterton. Endorse, who was one of his mounts at Tauherenikau. will not make the trip. • A. G. Murray, who scored an eleven® hour ride which proved a winning mount in the Champion at Riccarton Pink Coat ’J® ride Rameses in the Masterton Cup and Ladykiller in the Flying. C. Broughton, another apprentice from G. New’s stable, who rode * winner each day at Feilding, will ag*» pilot Oral in the Juvenile Handicap *- Masterton, while he will also ride Fira Ruler. Broughton and Murray also do the riding for the stable. Lucky Bag has come back into * active ranks following upon a *° " night's spell. Her full-brother, who is a big commanding sort, is worked on the road at the present tini Both are by Lucullus, but they preseta contrast in size. J. P. Coyle is at present moulding Son o’ Mine into shape for the activities. Although still a little b * the chestnut went very well in a out with Vexatious prior to the Tn , ham mare leaving for Ellerslle a steeplechase event should not P beyond him.
