CHEAP PASSAGE
PAPAKURA BOY DESERTS lONIC FARE COSTS £7 10/A cheap passage from England to Papakura was obtained by Warren Mills, who deserted from the steamer lonic on March 4. He appeared at the Police Court this morning to say why he did it. Chief-Detective Hammond said Mills had signed on in England for the round trip and had said good-bye to his ship at Auckland. Warren said he had gone to Canada from New Zealand in the first place. Then he had worked his way to England, where he had got a job on the lonic for New Zealand. He had no excuse to offer for desertion. He belonged to Papakura. “Another case of a New Zealander stranded in London getting a cheap passage back to his native country,” said the chief detective. “Fined £5, costs £2 10s,” said Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M. “In default 14 days’ imprisonment.” Mills was given 14 days to find the money.
