“STRAIGHT" PLAY PAYS A BIG BONUS
rpHEATRE managers have often called a company together to suggest a decrease in salary in order to save a play, says a London paper, but Maurice Browne’s gesture at the Savoy is sufficiently unprecedented to be worthy of record. After a recent matinee, he told everybody employed in the theatre, including not only the actors but the stage-hands and programme sellers, that owing to the success of “Journey’s End” it was proposed to give a bonus on the salaries for the past month. “Journey’s End” is making a very big profit, and this is likely to continue, as the “libraries” have completed another deal (amounting to £16,000), which is said to be the greatest ever made for a “straight” play.
