REMNANTS—AND THEIR USES

Remnants! Picked up at the sales because you simply could not resist the temptation to acquire them at “gift” prices. But you have not the least idea what to do w.ith some of them because they are so tiny. Perhaps one or two of the following suggestions may prove useful: If you have, say, half a yard or so of printed satin, or brocade, make yourself a smart little vest for wear with your new suit. You want merely a strip of material long enough to reach from the base of the throat to waist and wide enough to fill in the space left visible when the coat is unfastened. Hem it along the sides and finish the lower edge with ornamental fringe (also a remnant!) Make a fringed collar and attach the front points of this to the top edge of the vest. You can slip the whole over your head and keep it firm with ribbons stitched to the sides and tied at the back, so fastenings need not worry you. If you have enoggh material left for a straight scarf, finish one end of it with fringe and attach the other end to the bock of the collar. You are now provided with one of Fashion's last-minute dress accessories. The sketch shows you exactly how to make it.

Another idea: Patchwork is to be fashionable again this season, especially for sports w’ear. Odd lengths of 1 different coloured fabrics will furnish the material for a very smart sports jumper. Get a good pattern and cut the foundation from some material that will keep its shape and not pull when the patches are attached. Tack it up, try it on, and make sure that it j fits perfectly. Now remove tacking threads, spread the material out, flat I and lightly stitch the patches in place, being careful to arrange them so that ! the colours blend well and some defii nite pattern is achieved. Of course the j edges of the patches must be turned under and pressed before being attached. -When ail the pieces are tacked, herringbone them down to the foundation -with silk to match the outstanding colour. Thus you will secure a sports jumper, the duplicate of which you are not likely to meet round the corner. If you have not sufficient remnants for so ambitious a piece of work, make a long, broad scarf and a pochette to match. “Sets” of this description are quite in the picture just now. Collar and cuffs set off plain or (

printed crepe de chine, satin, linen, lawn, organdi, and so on, are invalu-> able for brightening up dark frocks. One or two sets, with perhaps a couple of fichus, lace edged or scalloped, will see you through the season so far as dainty accessories are concerned. All can be made from tiny oddments of material. Little housekeepers' aprons, made from short lengths of cretonne or coloured linen braid bound round the

edges and fitted with capacious, braided pockets, will form an excellent “selling-line” at a bazaar. So will wee rompers and pinafores for kiddies to say nothing of cushion covers, table mats, Laundry bags and dresscovers M.T.
