MR. BUSH HONOURED

PRESENTATIONS TO CITY ENGINEER 22 YEARS’ SERVICE A handsome grandfather clock, a smoker’s companion and a case of pipes were the gifts received by Mr. W. E. Bush, retiring city engineer, from the members of his outside staff, at. a smoke concert they tendered him last evening. The function was held in the Town Hall, and about 500 men were present, including visitors. Preceded by a Highland drummajor and followed by a piper, Mr. Bush was piped round the hall to his seat. With him at the table of honour were the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, and Messrs. J. S. Brigham, town clerk, J. Tyler, assistant city engineer, T. Pearson, superintendent of parks, and K. W. Rugg, manager of city abattoirs. In opening the proceedings, Mr. Baildon said that Mr. Bush had been city engineer for 22 years. He could see among those present men that had been in the City Council’s employ for as long as that, and some for even longer. Mr. Bush always had manifested the greatest consideration for his men. (Applause.) Mr. Tyler proposed the toast, “Our Guest.” He said Mr. Bush had endeared himself to his men by his courtesy and kindness. (Applause.) Many gigantic engineering works had been carried out under his supervision. He wished Mr. Bush all success and happiness. The men gave three hearty cheers for their retiring chief. After Mr. Tyler had made the presentation, Mr. Bush spoke feelingly regarding his association with the men of his department. He called to mind many incidents of the past, and as parting advice counselled them to continue their good work in the service of the city. Six pipers and a drummer then mounted the stage and played “The 79tli Farewell to Gibraltar.” A musica-l and humorous programme and the honouring of further toasts was carried out until late in the evening.
