NORMAL SCHOOL BATHS?
DEPUTATION TO EDUCATION BOARD PLANS TO BE OBTAINED A deputation from th© Auckland Normal School Parents’ Association waited on the Auckland Education Board this morning:, requesting a lead from the board on the question of providing swimming baths at the Auckland Training College. Mr. Baylin, on behalf of the deputation, said that during the summer the staff thought it necessary to have instruction in swimming, so the children had to bo taken to the Mount Eden baths. He thought there was no school in Auckland where baths were more essential than at the Normal School. The chairman. Mr. Burns: You can get a £ for £ subsidy up to £2OO Mr. Bayliss said that the baths would cost probably £2,000. A canvass had been made among the parents, bur the collection had been small. Mr. A. T. Dow. supporting the first speaker, said the bath would be a j valuable acquisition. in that the j teachers of the Training College would be taught also, and this would be valuable when they went out into the province. The chairman assured the deputation that it had the sympathy of every member of the board. He would like i to see swimming a compulsory subject if finances would allow it. Mr. E. C. Banks moved that the board request the Government to con- i tribute £I,OOO and a £ for £ subside I on the sum raised by the Normal i School Parents’ Association. Mr. Hoe seconded. 1? inally the board decided to get 1 plans and specifications before further j discussing the question at its next meeting. m.
