PATSY TRIUMPHS
COMEDY AT HiS MAJESTY’S Another delighted audience sympathised and laughed with “The Patsy” at His Majesty’s Theatre last evening. The clever and modern comedy of an American Cinderella gained fresh supporters, and J. C. Williamson’s excellent company, which is presenting the play in Auckland, scored a further success. “The Patsy” is the story of a girl who is overshadowed socially by the family attention lavished on her elder sister. Her only champion is her father, and he is embarrassed by the naggings of a silly and would-be extravagant wife. To improve her mind, Patricia buys a book entitled, “Wise and Witty Sayings for All Occasions.” She “swots” this carefully, but produces her witticisms at the wrong moments until she is suspected of becoming half-witted. However, there is method in Patsy’s madness, and she wins the man she loves in a manner most shrewd and hilarious. Irene Homer, an actress of novel methods and charming personality, is the star of “The Patsy,” and seldom has a more popular figure appeared on the comedy stage of Auckland. She is ably supported by five players whose abilities are fully in keeping with the general standard of the production.
