DANGEROUS CORNER

GREAT SOUTH—MANUKAU RDS. The Auckland Automobile Association has been endeavouring for some time to secure the substitution of white lines for the traffic dome at the intersection of the Great South Road and Manukau Road. The dome has already been once moved, and it appears impossible to centre it reasonably under the conditions which prevail at this junction. It is possible to have traffic converging from five directions on this corner. If the Great South Road and Manukau Road met at right angles and there was not the additional complication of St. Mark’s Road and Fairfax Road, a dome might suffice, but under existing conditions traffic frequently cuts inside the dome. The intersection was inspected this week by traffic officials and representatives of the Auckland Automobile Association, and it is hoped that white lines will be given a trial.

C.J.S. —I am trying to locate a rattle which occurs in my Morris-Cowley (1926) at certain times. The rattle is only apparent when I am “driving behind the throttle,” or when the car is over-running the engine with a. verylight pressure on the accelerator pedal. At no other time is it noticeable. With the car stationary, and the engine running, no trace of it can be heard. The rattle certainly appears to come from beneath the bonnet. The fan belt is 0.K., but I suspect the gear wheel on the magneto driving shaft. There is a slight amount of “back-lash” here. How could this be taken up? This trouble was noticed first when the car had run about 5.000 miles. * * * I am of the opinion that the trouble is undoubtedly caused through slackness in the pistons or gudgeon pins. The noise may be coming from the timing gears, and if so it can be eliminated by removing the fan drive pulley and then removing the camshaft retaining flange; shims can then be fitted behind the cam-shaft flange to eliminate the end play from the shaft. In doing this any play which is behind the camshaft and crankshaft timing wheels will be taken up. I do not think there will be any play in the magneto drive gear.
