Conductor was Not April Fool
WANTED CAR FARE OFFENDER FINED 30 - When Eastwood Welch refused to pay his tram fare on April 1, the conductor refused to be an April fool. He turned the joke neatly by calling a constable. rjtHE sequel was that Eastwood Welch, a labourer, aged 50, appeared at the Police Court this morning to answer charges of being drunk in Parnell Road and failing to pay his tram fare on demand. He pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said Welch got into a tramcar in Queen Street yesterday to go to Parnell Road. He was drunk at the time. When the conductor asked for his fare, Welch refused to pay and became bad-tempered and abusive. A constable was called and Welch was arrested.
Asked what he had to say to the charge Welch murmured, “How long do I get to pay?” “That’s hardly an answer to the charge,” said Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M.. as he decided that Welch’s day out was worth 10s or 24 hours on the charge of being drunk, and 20s or three days for refusing to pay his fare.
