Evelyn Locanda Wins the Handicap
ETTA COLEJWELL BEATEN HAWERA MEETING OVER (Special to THE SU2\J HAWERA, Monday. The Hawera meeting concluded today in fine, cold weather. The attendance was good and the track in splendid order. The totaiisator showed an increase of £1,493 on the last Easter fixture. W. Hughes was fined £2 in the Trial Handicap for carelessly pulling Gang Awa up at the finish of a race, while R. Tapp was lined £1 for looking round on High Sea at the finish of the saddle race. Arachne was subjected to argument after running second in tiie Kaponga Handicap on the grounds of inconsistency, but no action was taken. Trial Handicap Dawdler did not dawdle in the Trial Handicap, and when the stand was reached had 10 lengths lead from Gang Awa and the favourite, Great Delight. Along the back the Waikato pacer was still well clear, being followed by Polly’s Picture, Gang Awa, All Red and Alice Axworthy.. Crossing the top Alice Ax worthy reduced Dawdler’s lead to five lengths, Gang Awa a similar distance away, and this was the order into the straight. Hill Top doing best of the remainder. Dawdler won easing up by two lengths, Gang Awa, who was also pulling up, being half a length ahead of All Red, followed by Alice Axworthy, Hill Top, Polly’s Picture and Louie Dillon. Ohawe Trot Ben Bingen ■wound up favourite for the Ohawe Trot, and unwinding a fine effort won by three lengths, paying a good price owing to several being fairly evenly backed. Ben Bingen took the lead at the end of half a mile, followed by Audo Spray and Leo Mauritius. Along the back Eva Reta ran up to second berth, and the order into the straight was Ben Bingen three lengths clear of Eva Reta, Leo Mauritius, Call Boy and Kolmar. The leader was never troubled, winning easily, Eva Reta being a length ahead of Kolmar, with Call Boy and Leo Mauritius next to cross the line. The Big Race
Dilworth was a warm favourite for the Waiinate Plains Handicap, and L. Berkett attempted to win from end to end, but at the distance was under pressure and failed over the final pinch. Derby Lynn fiddled on the mark and was early in a bad position. Sir Author being behind Dilworth at the end of two furlongs, followed by Roddy, Explosion} and Joy Bird. Passing the stand the favourite was showing the way to Sir Author, Joy Bird. Roddy, Explosion, Van Rich and Derby Lynn, and there was practically no alteration along the back, where Evelyn Locanda was noticed moving up. At the last turn Dilworth was just in front bf Roddy and Sir Author, with Evelyn Locanda, Derby Lynn and Linkman handy. A great race ensued to the box. Bryce, getting in a good run, got Evelyn Locanda home by half a length from Derby Lynn, who was unlucky, with Linkman a nepk away th4i*4, and Explosion fourth. Then came Roddy, Sir Author and Dilworth. Patea Handicap High Sea, favourite for the Patea Handicap, hit the front inside a furlong, and led along the back from Silver Link, Our Patch and Bingen King. Crossing the top the favourite dropped back, Our Patch taking command from Silver Link, with High Sea next, Bingen King and Halmore also being handy. Our Patch vyas first into the straight, two lengths clear of Silver Link and High Sea. The favourite made a dash at the distance and was soon in front, to go on and win by two lengths from Bingen King, who was half a length ahead of Silver Link, with Sailor Boy, Our Patch and Cornelian in line next. Kapuni Handicap A great race was witnessed for the Kapuni Handicap, in which the little fancied Great Ballin acted as pacemaker for the greater part of the journey. El Direct was favourite and led out of the straight from Great Ballin, Native Hero, Bell Dial, Ngahuia and Trustworthy. Along the back Great Ballin was sailing away in the van from the favourite, Bell Dial. Native Hero, Trustworthy and Ngahuia. When the straight was reached Great Ballin held a very slight advantage over Native Hero and El Direct, Bell Dial, Our Nancy and Ngahuia being bunched next. In the run home Ngahuia did best to Win by a length from Great Ballin, who was a neck in front of Native Hero. Bell Dial was a nose away fourth, followed by Our Nancy, Black Ballin and Enawah. Opunake Handicap Etta Cole was favourite for the Opunake Handicap, and while she ran a good race had to be content with third place. Kolmar went away quickly and won from end to end. With a circuit gone the order was Kolmar, All Peters, Bright Light, Dipnoi, Etta Cole, Peter McKinney and Ukulele Lady, the last named breaking badly. Down the back Kolmar and All Peters were clear of Bright Light, Dipnoi and Etta Cole, and the order was unchanged at the home turn. In the race for the judge Etta Cole made a good effort, but Kolmar hung on to win by two lengths from All Peters, Etta Cole half a length away third. Then came Dipnoi, Peter McKinney and Bright Light. Stewards’ Handicap The Trustworthy—Carmel Bracket was a good favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap, and they ran first and third, being split at the post by Cora Tacks, who was allowed to pay a false price. Trustworthy was the early leader, followed by Admiral Lock, Our Patch, Enawah and Cora Tacks. Along the back Enawah put in a great burst of speed and took second place with Cora Tacks and Carmel moving up. Trustworthy was first round the bend from Cora Tacks. Enawah and Carmel. but despite a desperate challenge from Cora Tacks, Trustworthy won by a length. Carmel was two lengths back third, followed by Admiral Loch, Enawah, Richore and High Sea, who was penalised 12 yards. Kaponga Handicap Great Delight, after several good efforts at the meeting, won the Kaponga Handicap nicely, and was allowed to pay a great price. Hostess
was a slightly better favourite thar Arachne. but she never threatened danger, although finishing fourth.” Great Delight was in front quickly and led from Lightfoot and Native Hero, these three being at tho head of affairs with half the journey covered. Native Hero headed Great Delight crossing the top, but the latter came again and was first into the straight from Arachne and Native j Hero. In a good finish Great Delight i won by a length from Arachne, with Wakefield two lengths away third. j Hostess was fourth, and Native Hero j next.
